  • Another DSG failure

I see in this months "Wheels" magazine their long term test mule Octavia TSI has had a DSG failure. This is scary, it s the 4th one I ve heard of now. A friend of mine had his reconditioned (in a VW) as it was months out of warranty and according to the "auto transmission service centre" VAG DSGs were keeping him booked out with work and he advises a transmission service every 15,000km. I d be looking at some sort of extended warranty if I had one of these boxes.

DSG service is expensive. I dont know if its a viable option to include it at every service!

I wouldnt panic just yet. Other than a bit of harsh shifting I havent heard of too many people having problems. What you need to consider is that there are thousands and thousands of them out there. There are bound to be failures. But that applies to any transmission. Even the manuals

Just out of interest do VW make their own transmissions or are they made under contract by somebody else?

Another DSG failure - do we know exactly what kind of failures are occuring - is it a clutch failure or is it a sensor failure, or is it a software failure, or is it an actual transmission failure?? And at how many km's are we talking here?? Is it the 6 speed or the 7 speed DSG or is it both?

Getting a transmission serviced every 15,000km - what the hell would they be servicing, surely not an oil change??

From what I've heard it's a simple sensor/software fault, and a quick trip into the dealership to have an update/replaced sensor fitted is all that is required.

Yep , wet clutch like a motor bike. So oil changes vital. Apparently DSG goes into limp home mode and expect $4-5k overhaul. Ouch.

A similar thing was happening on Land Rover 5 speed auto boxes (which are made by Jatco and were also used in Mazdas Nissans, Renaults and BMW's) several years ago. Limp home, lots of clutch slip huge bill for replacement gearbox.
It turned out that the actual fault as a small electronic valve that could be replaced fairly cheaply but it involved mechanics actually getting their hands dirty and doing a partial disassembly of the box to get at the valve.

              Scaremongering based on hearsay.

VAG has millions of these boxes in the field.

Sorry its not scaremongering, its fact . VAG need to change their service intervals for DSGs in Australia.

Confirmed with Skoda Aust that my DSG does not need the "service campaign" carried out (according to VIN No.)
My car will be doing a bit of towing so will see how it holds up.

Perhaps this thread should be titled 'Another DSG beat up"!

As I'm on my second DSG equipped car with no problems whatsoever, I get sick of the hearsay and exxagerated claims.

Firstly, someone told someone you know that DSG transmission were keeping him booked out with work, this is what is known as hearsay not fact. Secondly, has it ever occurred to you that the someone who told someone you know that the DSG should be serviced every 15,000 KM has an obvious motivation for saying this, clearly he stands to profit from those who are stupid enough to believe him. My guess is that most automatic transmission repairers wouldn't know the front end of a DSG from the back end and would not be equipped to service them anyway.

As for this being "scary", as you don't have a DSG, there is no reason for you to be scared is there?

Is the DSG perfect? No, but there are millions of them out there and the incidence of problems is relatively small, those who do have problems make a big noise about it (as most people would), those who don't have problems say little.

I totally agree with you!! I'm sick of reading about people bagging out the DSG. We bought our Jetta new 8 months ago and has 20000kms on it now and its been an awesome box with no problems at all.

Hi all .... I agree there can be scare mongering on issues like this but I will report that our production manager at work bought a brand new Mk 5 Golf which had a DSG problem with in the first 12 months. Covered under warranty of course. She was driving a loan car for a couple of weeks so I guess it was a major problem. I'm sure if there are real problems with these units it would be all over the main stream media as the Ford Territory problems are. ....... Cheers ..... Geoff

The only reason I am looking to get a Skoda Wagon is because of the DSG gearbox.

We have an 06 Golf GTI with over 50000km on the clock and no issues at all with the gear box. It is one of the main reasons I love that car so much.

We have a new baby on the seen and need something bigger - I Welcome the RS DSG Wagon...

So don't be put off by the by the DSG transmission it is awesome.
