  • Tariff Price Reductions

    Hi All,

After much hype and anticipation it appears Skoda have released a restructured price list for December 2009 through to 2010 which is a reduction on RRP for its entire model range.

There are a lot of variations on price depending on model so i will detail it all and post it on here later on, it appears though the entry level models have been targeted heavily.

Strategy seems get them in witha nice hook, then show the more desireable product where the margins might be a little better...

      I await VW's announcement.

And thanks for sharing the above.

Its all rather irrelevant when dealers seem to wear the "on roads" just to get the cars out. The RRP doesn t mean "Jack". Hope the discounting doesn t get that bad that it is going to leave a "bad taste inthe mouth" of current owners. Thats one way to allienate repeat buyers. But I guess they ve got do what it takes to get the brand "out there". A bit more advertising may help.

I share your concern Antiplastix, in this scenario though every manufacturer that imports new vehicles are 'damned if they do and damned if they don't'. I write on this forum solely to epress my own personal opinion, not that of the company i work for nor for Skoda Australia. I for one though are happy to see Skoda take this step before waiting for the majority to move, it shows they have a committment to being transparent with their potential owners. Thye have also fone this before 2010 so they can try and illiminate customers missing out in the december sales, that is also commendable.

If the price reduction is related to the forthcoming tariff reduction, how is it that the "cheaper" Skoda Ambition achieves a drop that is three times that of it's more expensive brother, the Elegance? It doesn't make sense.

I think it is more about market segment positioning, rather than a straight pass-through of the actual tariff cuts. As long as they sell more Skodas then I'm all for it

Too true. Skoda must be selling plenty of Octavia RS's. $500 off for a car that's pretty much the same price as a Superb Ambition ($3,000 off).

All reduced by $500 off RRP

Hi guys, I placed my order for an RS DSG sedan in early Nov, and had got it written on the contract that whatever 'import duty decrease' Skoda will introduce in the new year, that will be passed on to me.
However I can't see the $500 off RRP (as stated aboved) on Skoda Australia's pricelists on the website. Instead I can see that Discount New Cars is saying dealers are now offering $2000 worth of free accessories on the new RS - purchased before Feb 28 2010.
Can you please advice on what this means to a contract which says 'import duty decrease will be passed on to the client'
Now if this 'decrease' is being offered in the form of free accessories, what should I expect?
                    Thank you.

Hi Kenvik_7, just to clarify the promotion of free accesories relates to vehicles sold after 12/12/2009 and delivered before 28/02/2010, it also excludes any corporate or government purchases.

As for the tariff reduction it is a real thing and the dealer is obligated to pass it on whether you have stipulated it in the order or not. It also works in reverese as we ahve a legal right and the purchaser a legal obligation to pay any wholesale cost increases from the manufacturer. In this case however it will work to your favour to the tune of $500

                        Hi Chris,
Thanks for the quick reply and clarifying the actual start date of the new promotional campaign.
Can you (or other members of the forum) advice on what are a customer's rights in terms of price protection of their investment, when a manufacturer runs a discount campaign (in this case worth $2000 price reduction), and a customer is not even made aware of this, less than 3 weeks before signing a contract.
Also is the campaign only for cars in stock (most of which do not have any options and are bare bone RS models), or even for those ordered from the factory, in which case, the way I see it, since my car isn't even made as yet, I should have at least some price protection for such large fluctuations.

And yes, I agree that it can work the reverse way too, but that condition is clearly listed in the 'terms & conditions' of the contract one typically signs, but no where are such conditions about 'promotional discounts' laid out.

                        Thanks in advance.

Before some of the synics get on and belt dealers i would first like to state that any promotion is controlled and enacted solely by the importer. As i am sure we can all appreciate as a franchisee we are just facilitating their promotion with some margin to use at our discretion.

A fair portion of it is pot luck, sometimes a promotion for free on roads will run in October because they are heavily stocked with a particular model or in december as they are running out a model there are millions of scenario's and the promotions are based off whatever situation has presented itself at the time. Mid and end of year promotions seem to be the most common for all brands for obvious reasons. The purpose of this promotion for Skoda is to get a launch pad into 2010 hence the fast start promotional heading.

Speak to your dealer but the way it works is free registration and free CTP normally of a value around $700 and free stamp duty normally around $1100. They then throw in the $2,000 of accesories and the total reduction in theory is $3,800 off RRP. They haven't given the fine print but there doesn't seem to be a hint of a lot more room to move from here so you wouldn't be missing out on anything really if your discount was in this vacinity. It exludes corporate buyers also becuase their discount is far greater than this as you know.

It may not make you feel any better about the situation but it does give you a little insight, speak to your selling dealr and then take it up with Skoda if you are not happy from there.

                          All the best

                            Thanks again Chris,
I understand your position (as a dealer), and the case also would have been different had I already received the car and was enjoying driving it. After that I don't see a point as a customer whinging about price reductions.

I'll talk to my dealer about this and see how it goes. Can you please confirm that this promotion is only for cars that are already in stock or is it also applicable for factory orders placed between Dec 12 to Feb 28?
                            Thanks.

Seeing as you are obviously pointing at me I will for once back you up on this.
When it comes to promotions unless it's a dealer body organised promotion dealers are generally meat in the sandwich and are often the last people to know the terms and conditions.
What customers need to do here is get factual information from the people running the promotion either by way of printed material from the dealership or the manufacturers web site or verbally directly from the manufacturer (make sure that the source is attributable if it's verbal).
