New vRS owner!

G'day

I've just purchased an 09 plate pre update Sprint Yellow TFSI Manual Hatch.

I believe I have done really well with my changeover from another obscure European brand (a Fiat Punto Sport Hatch) And am really looking forward to picking up my vRS.

I will post pics on delivery and I look forward to being active on these forums!

Out of interest Calais, how did you find the Punto? My wife is looking at getting a new car in the near future and likes the Fiats-I looked at them myself (out of loyalty as I'm a life member of the Fiat Car Club) but they had nothing to suit me so I bought my Skoda. She likes the 500 sport and the Punto sport.

I had my Punto Sport 1.9JTD hatch for just over two and a half years and more than 80,000km of trouble free motoring. Sadly the 1.9 Turbo Diesel is no longer imported, but all in all I couldnt have asked for more from the little Fiat. It pulled all day and all night on my travels all over the East coast of Australia and in over 80,000km averaged 6.0L/100km. I travelled extensively pulling a little trailer, also in traffic, and it never missed a beat. A top little car, I will be a tad sad to walk away from it at the Skoda dealership.

I am looking forward to the step up in size and performance of the vRS though!

Fiat's have huge on-road costs. The 500 Lounge is something like $32k on-road! :O And value/reliability isn't something I'd associate with the brand (sorry Calais!)...buy a Roomster if you're shopping in that price bracket (it's literally fantastic!)

Bit of a thread hijack! I'm well aware of the price of the Fiats-but this is for my wife not me. She doesn't like the Roomster but would like a look at a Fabia-if we ever get them. Personally while the 500 is alot of fun, I think I'd tire of it pretty quick myself. Doesn't even have cruise control! I'd buy a Punto Sport with the 1.4 turbo-great engine. I'd research alot before I committed though-like I did for the RS.

My RS is a 2007 model Calais which I bought to replace my 2002 VX Berlina wagon. It's alot more fun to drive than the Holden, alot more fuel efficient and it gets noticed alot more. The Berlina was a more relaxed interstate cruiser, a little faster (it was a V and a slightly better ride. In every other way the Skoda is better. I've done 27000 km in 10 months in it and enjoyed every one.
Actually there was one more thing better on the Holden-the auto headlights worked well. The Skoda keeps turning them on at weird times-like on a sunlit day-and they don't go off again.

I have to admit, some of the automatic features of the Skoda do make me a tad nervous, like the windscreen wipers!! Is there any way to manually control their operation? As for the lights, cant they just be turned off at the rotary switch on the drivers right?

I really am looking forward to delivery, which if all goes to plan should be friday!! then a massive cruise to get acquainted.

I have never owned what I would class as a performance car before, and am considering an APR chip upgrade, has anyone actually driven a manual vRS with one of these mods?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

The headlights have the dial that is in the following order (Off, Auto, Parkers and Low-Beam with one pull for front Fogs and another pull for the Rear Fog). The wipers aren't able to be turned-off completely (unlike headlights) but mine haven't gone wrong once (touch-wood) so I dunno. I love it how they adjust to the rain speed without you doing a single thing (like putting them on speed 2 and the amount of rain decreasing so then the wipers automatically go down to speed 1). It's just so thoughtful!

There are 4 positions of the control wand for the front wipers, none give you true manual control over the time delay between intermittent sweeps:

Off

Down (1 manual sweep)

Up one (auto, sensitivity supposedly controlled by the switch half way along the top of the stalk, this is intended to take care all needs)

Up two (manual normal speed)

Up Two (manual fast speed)

If it is very light rain I tend to use the manual 1 sweep as and when I feel it is required, but at highway speeds I don't usually need anything, as the Aquapel glass treatment helps the wind blow the rain off.

So if you don't like what the auto wipers are doing you can get by with the other manual functions. I wish you had the option of a manually set intermittent delay either instead of the auto function, or as well as. A lot of people that complain leave their wipers on auto all the time, I don't.

Is the Bluefin the most cost and power/economy effective compared to, say the APR Tune?

It'd be nice have the neddies under the bonnet to really hook along if the feeling grabs.

If you really want to open that can of worms (which remap ?) you might find more info over at the Golf sub forums - either Mk V or VI, depending on whether you are looking at the cam belt engine (Mk V) or the timing chain engine (Mk VI). They argue over everything with great passion and emotion (but very little really comparitive, objective info).

Some things very few people seem to consider seriously before getting a remap are:

Legality (a remap IS considered to be a significant engine mod, and in the ACT at least you need an emission test AND and engineers certificate).

Insurance cover

Just a quick update, all my lease paperwork has been finalised with financial settlement due tomorrow!

Then all things going well, I pick up my new RS on friday, then off to the RTA to get my plates transferred and then I'm looking forward to a weekend of getting used to my first sporty car.
