Boot 12 volt outlet problem

Hi there.

I have a video camera I wanted to run out of the 12 volt outlet in the boot of my Octavia Wagon. Plugged in the cord and there was a slight flash (? spark) but the led light in the cord glowed red as intended.

The the led went out and now it appears the outlet no longer works.

Plugged the same cord into the front cigarette lighter (only briefly thought, to test it) and it worked fine.

Any idea of the possible problem with the rear outlet now?

Am heading away on a road trip Friday morning and would like to get this sorted out asap, was relying on the outlet being available to run this video camera...


...Ok now that I know what it's called (was looking for rear cigarette lighter in the fuse chapter of the car manual), I see Fuse #26 protects the power socket in luggage compartment, and is rated at 20 amps...

...Where do I get spare fuses (guessing this one has blown)...

hmmm where did I / did I receive a box of fuses??.....

Memory hazy...


...Ok located the fuse, and it is blown. Cannot locate box of fuses supplied with vehicle or memory of receiving box, but life has been hectic since I purchased. Any ideas of where to buy a replacement fuse set much appreciated.

If it is a std style fuse you can probably buy them almost anywhere that sells car stuff. Maybe Supacheap or Autobarn will be cheaper ?

Take the old one in to make sure you get the same power rating and style (Oh, and I'd buy at least half a dozen, as I predict you might go through a few while sorting out the problem with your lead/camera).

I don't know if anyone is getting a box of spares, if it was up to the dealer to deliver them with it, then chances are they are forgetting, unless its bolted down inside they always will.

In my 6 and I think our 323 as well, the spares were all in special holders in a compartment near the steering wheel. Guess noone else does that.

In Europe the cars come with a small box which has a full set of bulb and fuses where it's mandated by law and I assume this is what the manual is referring to.

In Australia on the other hand we don't have any requirements to carry spare bulbs/fuses/warning triangles/safety vest/first aid kit and as such VW don't fit them.

You can pick up a pack of 5 assorted fuses from places like Repco and Autobarn (Narva 527000BL is the pack for the ATM type mini fuse) for around $5. I would avoid supercheap auto as they only sell their own fuses which are some cheap chinese fuses that seem to corrode quickly even when in storage, the Narva fuses whilst still probably made in china seem to be better put together and don't corrode when in storage in my experience. I'm assuming the fuse is one of the mini types, check my photos in the link below to compare as it could be a standard size, I can't remember what the Golf uses for it's accessory sockets.

There is space for some spare fuses in each of the fuse boxes. I have some photos of the fuse box here which will show the two sizes (mini and standard).
