  • Octavia Wagon Rear wiper blades only last 1500km - Apparently!

When talking to the Dealer service centre re another minor matter and booking a service I mentioned the Ocatvia wagon rear wiper worked fine in one direction and then judders across on the return 'journey'. The problem is the wiper blade does not sit on the glass but has folded over - according to the service guys this is what happens to an old wiper blade and it needs to be replaced. Here's the funny bit - it has been doing this since the car was 1500kms old (probably sooner but this was the first time it rained and the wiper was used)!!!!

Service centre response - not covered under warranty as it is a 'consumable'. It is a $36 part that has only lasted a few hundred km of 'normal' use. Where do I stand here???? Do I need to budget for rear wiper blade failure every couple of thousand km!!!!! When this was mentioned I was told to contact the dealer who sold the car to me to see it they would wear it. Did this and was bounced back to the service centre who once again said - not covered under warranty.

Here's what I would be thinking if I was the dealer - this guy has recently bought the highest spec Octavia we sell, we are trying to establish a great product in this market and want good experiences with the brand to spread from the outset. Normally a wiper blade is consumable and we would not cover it however this car has only travelled 5000km and we would stand by our product and expect even consumables to last longer than that. We will wear the cost of a wiper blade and fit it at no cost when this customer comes in for their first service and we nail them for $350 for changing their oil.

This service centre has now lost $350 per minor service, parts and accessory sales (eg tints), major service costs and any other business over the next 5 or so years I intend to drive the car. Hope it was worth $36.

    Rant over.

Most car shops now sell the aero type wiper in any length with a suitable fitting for VWs Audis and Skodas.

I paid $20 each for mine and they are awesome.

But yes a bit of goodwill at the service centre would have helped them I expect.

Honestly I'd just buy one of the new bosch aero blades to replace it as they are cheaper & most probably better quality. Problem is with wiper blades is they are made of rubber, be it synthetic or natural, and it does deteriate. who knows how long it was on your car before it was sold to you, so replacing it with a fresh wiper blade you may find it last a lot longer 2nd time around. They ( wiper blade manufacturers ) do suggest that wiper blades are replaced every 12 months too.

Even a consumable would have a warranty to get a certain amount of usage before it's buggered. Ask them at what particular point the wiper rubber is no longer warranted. ie: Once you get out of the driveway of the dealership?

I'd put your points in writing to the dealer principal including the bit about lost income. A business relationship involves give & take & the rubber is an individually available part (you don't have to buy the holder). It's worth about $6 from spares - $3 from any other autoparts place.

You might wish to point out that oil is a consumable but VW dealers seem happy to do free top-ups of oil for all the oil burners.
