I haven't looked on mine, but hope I never see this, haven't heard of anything like this in cars in the last 15yrs...so amazed really.

Have a look at your cars, if you look closely, I bet you will find this on all of your cars. i had a look when I first got mine, and wiped away the dealers wax, but now looking again, I noticed it by accident while getting something out of the boot.
If you follow the ridge above the numberplate to the edge of the boot lid, you will probably find cracking...if you follow that ridge around to the inside, you may find more. I think mines got worse since new due to me opening the boot a lot.
Anyway I'm less than impressed that a brand new car comes like that, and I'm betting all the showroom ones have it. So far it seems Skoda have stayed completely silent about it, but eventually rust forms from the paint cracking. I've not seen anything like this since the early 80s. Apparently the ridges in the roof do it over time, and also the doors.
I'd be interested to see how many of you find it, I'm betting 100%.

Is it on the wagon, or just the hatch??sigpic Camden GTI Performance. VW / AUDI Specialists

Both, the most obvious spots are on the tailgate...or hatch in the outer edges of the ridge above the numberplate...but apparently people see it in the water ridges on the roof, and also under the rubber seals on the doors. I haven't seen it on the roof, nor looked under the doors but have seen it on the hatch. I had a courtesy car a while back and forgot to look at it.
Its apparently the mastic causing it to crack. Either way, I have not seen anything like this for 20 yrs, and even for a car under warranty, there seems to a silence from Skoda about it, and dealers in the UK seem to try and fix it, but it comes back so no body shop is touching it until Skoda figure out what to do.Last edited by woofy; 08-02-2009, 09:23 AM.

We might all be glad about the Skoda Australia warranty then :
Your new Škoda car also has a 12 year anti-corrosion perforation warranty.
I'm not too worried abut it for mine at the moment, what with the drought removing rain from the menu here in Canberra, and my inherent lazyness meaning I hardly ever wash my car there is very lttle moisture ever getting near the tailgate of my wagon.
Of course, if I had a black one (and hence a requirement for regular car washes to keep it looking reasonably clean), then I might have a greater concern. (just kidding)

Apparently its only covered by the 3 yr paint warranty....not the perforation one.....its a weird situation, the rust is getting in due to a defect in the paint...not due to the rust coming from the inside out...which is what the 12yr warranty covers.

Well the real worry is that, most of the UK dealers have documented it, and aren't doing anything until Skoda come up with a fix.
Its weird though as it seems to be limited to only cars from the last 1 or 2 yrs, so maybe they got a dodgy batch of mastic.

Apparently not, I've sent an email to Skoda Oz to ask about it, and no answer. I actually had a guy ring me once about a letter I wrote, and in it I mentioned that I've only once got an answer back and he acted really surprised.
I have a RS wagon with me today as a courtesy car so will check it before driving it back...

I had a good look at the ridge above the number plate on my wagon, and there seems to be small "holes" in the paint coverage on the outside edge. From looking at it carefully, my theory is that the paint doesn't like to stick to the mastic they have used to seal the edge, thus leaving gaps in the paint coverage. I think I'll try to fill in my "holes" with some touch up paint.
At least here in Oz we don't get the constant moisture that they get in the UK (well, not in the southern parts of Oz, anyway), and none of the corrosive salt that the UK puts on their roads when it snows.2017 MY18 Golf R 7.5 Wolfsburg wagon (boring white) delivered 21 Sep 2017, 2008 Octavia vRS wagon 2.0 TFSI 6M (bright yellow), 2006 T5 Transporter van 2.5 TDI 6M (gone but not forgotten).
