1st Service - 15k on the Octavia and Octavia RS!

Checked my wagon in for its first service (15k and 6 months)

Very impressed with the dealer after some dissapointing past experience with our Golf V. (same dealer)

Supplied my own Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30 and secured a loan car for the weekend (drop of sat, pick up mon).
Total cost of service - $181 plus the $52 I paid for the oil at Supercheap.

Very happy with the service and car running well. No major issues to report, apart from my front CS2's are looking rather sad..

PS: Also priced the underbonnet insulator and clips at $110 supplied. (why is this not std???)

So the underbonnet thing isn't on the vRS either? I didn't realise that - thought it was just a 1.8T thing. Mine is definitely quieter - possibly too quiet. Also it cuts heat transfer to the bonnet really well (which might mean slightly higher underbonnet temps).

Does Edge Sport 5w30 have VW(504?) approval? I thought only the 0w40 Edge was 504 approved. And $52 I've got an unopened bottle I bought in April for the Golf - $29.99 at Supercheap

Yes, confirmed VW spec approved.
Have ordered the insulator, should be in in a few weeks.

Out of interest, does your service book say you're on variable servicing or standard servicing? Mine says variable and I'm coming up to the 15k mark. Wondering if I should just get it done regardless of what the car says.

It might be worth checking whether you have to have services every 15,000Km/12 months to preserve your warranty.

My service book says variable servicing (CG2 code?) but AFAIK, it's turned off (needs VAGcom to enable).

My dealer was quite emphatic that I return every 15,000km/12 months (whichever comes first).

With the 2.0T, you should be checking oil levels in a big way around every 7500kms. I will be taking it somewhere for those intervals... It uses a bit of oil...

Just had a look & Variable Service is QG1.

To check it:
Get in car, shut door, put on seatbelt.
Turn ignition on but don't start the car.
press & hold the tripmeter reset button. After 2 seconds the distance/time to service will come on.

Mine currently reads 26,400km/646 days.

I suppose it might come in useful when you're out of warranty & don't care anymore. Even 15,000km seems too much

Depends on how you run it in. Mine hasn't used a drop in 15k. Don't nannie it , bed it in (with mechanical sympathy) and it will reward you with good power and economy (im averaging 8.0 L/100km now)

I reckon a new engine should have the oil level checked every 500km for the first 5000km. Then you get an idea of how the consumption is. It wasn't unusual on Subarus to use 1L in 500km = empty sump in 2000km.

Mine hasn't used a drop in 5600km - same run-in style as DanSA. I'll check it every 5000km from here on.

Don't nannie it and it'll give u years of trouble free motoring, assuming its always up to temp, fuel of oil and on premium juice..

The MkV GTI was fine with oil up til 25,000kms when the oil light light came on during a trip to sydney. I didnt do an oil change at 22,500. Should have checked, but the car was not thrashed from purchase. It had a relaxing run in period under advice from motorsport engineers.

Where can i find which oils meet standard for my golf? It's a 2.0FSI MkV. I've looked online and cant seem to find it - how do you guys know which ones to use? (Golf due for service and would like to suply own oil).

Manufacturers website. Generally under the Products tab - look for the TDS (Technical Data Sheet) if you aren't sure what you are reading then don't be embarrassed to send their technical department an email. I do it all the time for my job:

eg "Brand X maintenance manual specifies BP grease product ZZZ. We prefer to use Caltex/Penrite/Slick50/Woolies products. What is your equivalent to BP product ZZZ. Application is for xxx water pump with horizontal shaft operating X hours per day. Unit is mounted outdoors, temp range x, rain, service intervals X, blah... have a nice day thanks"
