Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Protecting the badge on your keyfob

I noticed a mates VW logo on his keyfob was almost unreadable after 18 months ownership.

I realise you can buy new badges on ebay but figured why let it get buggered in the first place.

My fix takes 2 minutes & is free. I figure it will need re-doing every 6 months.

You will need some magic tape. This is the opaque looking sticky tape - ask the dragon that looks after the stationary cupboard at work if she'll give you about 20mm.

Stick the magic tape over the logo & smooth it down a bit.

Use a sharp blade & carefully cut around the outside edge - don't press hard.

Remove the outer bit of tape and smooth down the magic tape with your finger nail.
The finish is slightly dulled but otherwise unnoticeable.
Before is on the right; After is on the left.

I think that might be a collectors item now.

It was a Champion Spark Plugs freebie & I've had it on every set of car keys for almost 30 years (gee that's flown by)

instead of that frosted finish tape why not just use the gloss finish clear tape that you can buy pretty much anywhere. it will be perfectly clear and shinnnyy !

Who knows? Maybe he's one of these people that has his hands in his pocket & rubs the badge with his thumb?

Magic tape removes without residue & moulds better (IMO). Also, it's in the stationary cupboard at work

I think the photos in post #1 show what is happening to the logo badge on the key fob (sharing a pocket with all those hard objects). Some clear vinyl like they use to protect bonnets would probably give longer lasting protection (and is available in a high gloss).
