  • Going Nuts on a loan car

As a few of you know I have a 1995 Seat Ibiza gti as a loaner . Its been getting a bit old with the front suspension , brakes needed upgrading , all the usual with nearly 200k on the clock , so I decided to do the 5 stud conversion . Done a search on vortex and nobody gave a detailed report on what needs to be changed etc . So I pulled it apart and this is what I done :

Removed discs , caliper carrier , hub , hub carrier , outer c.v. joint , ball joint .
Used Vr6 hub and carrier (any model will do ) , used vr6 lower ball joint BUT will not bolt on directly , the two inner locating holes need to be offset opened up to allow for the smaller size in the lower control arm . Wasnt a lot of grinding but must be done . Used early 280mm vr6 brake discs , caliper carrier and brake pads . Same pads can be used from the original Seat gti brakes . Used same calipers , they bolt straight on . Used original tie rod . The c.v joint needs to be replaced with a vr6 unit due to the larger outer splines on the vr6 hub .
All went together quite nicely , the improvement wasnt drastic but does make a difference when braking hard .

    Rear brakes
A set of old beetle front wheel bearings . A set of vr6 discs , vr6 rear pads and it all bolts together without a problem

    Suspension .
Originally I purchased a set of KW V3's for the VR6 but until I get the rule book for sport fwd Im not going to bother much with that car . I really wanted big powered fwd but dont have a class to run it in anymore
So the Seat got the full treatment . Car handles superb now , the height is what I want it at , its a tad stiff , but I havent fully set it up for the street yet .

    Interior
Seat gti Seats are out and VR6 seats are in . They are definately more comfortable and I miss my VR6 .

The next step is to swap the Oettinger chip for the EMS stinger 2 out of the Vr6 , custom exhaust and intake . Hopefully it will be as quick as what my VR6 was in a straight line before . And then I'll , well , go back to working on the VR6 . I've just blown my whole budget for respraying the VR6 and getting the roll cage made , but , sometimes other cars are more important .

If anyone needs part numbers etc on conversion feel free to pm me

Nice one. Thanks for adding to our knowledgebase. Its good to have the right bits before you start a conversion.

      Great write-up!

Very well described. The new forum is in the final stages of import/installation. It's been a hassle, but the light's on at the end of the tunnel and with luck it won't be an approaching train. In the new forum I intend to have a place for conversions with a shadow left in the main forum for easy navigation. With your permission that's where this article with go.

By the way, why do you spoil your customers so much? And it's great to see the Seat getting "the treatment". They're an under-rated car IMO

Always wanted to do that to my beeza. Love the way it looks on a wider track, fiils out the guards much better. Probably gives you a better choice of wheels to fit too. If you run a shop, book me in..... i wanna do that

            It wont be cheap ,
Best to do it when you need both front and read discs and pads done

$1300 is a tad excessive , even if it was with new wheel bearings

Do you have a drum rear end ?

As far as i remember, got charged around 200 a rotor, plus cost of rear bearings plus pads allround. All genuine from seat at thornleigh. Got a freind at a small workshop in rozelle to fit em. So yeah, all up about 1300
