the seat has a new pwoblem.. a few times now in the past month or so, i'll be driving around for 10mins and then while sitting at the lights idling in neutral.. the car just conks straight out. it doesnt seem to struggle then die.. just dies straight away. it then takes a few goes to get it running again. im still only putting 98 into it so i assume the engine would be alot cleaner than all the cars running ethanol or normal unleaded..

    any ideas?

they certainly hate the damp/wet.. could also be the little hose coming from the throttle body area? notorious for cracking etc , but that normaly gives the 'hunting' type problems..

it hasnt done it whilst its been wet.. so im guessing its got nothing to do with it.

could it have anything to do with fuel? even tho i only put 98 in it? worth throwing a bottle of spitfire through? should probably give it a clean out regardless..

Good call. Seen plenty of both with dry soldered joints in them causing intermittent cutting out, non-starting.

                had same problem last year.

Mine started with the fuse (yellow) to the fuel pump had a hair line crack which when hot would go open circuit but when cold would be closed circuit on the multimeter, holding it up to the light it looked like a perfect fuse. The F'n thing took 8 hours to find.

6 months later the same fuse kept blowing and stalling the car -found the fuel pump in the fuel tank to be seized. VW wanted $850 for one, 2nd hand wanted $150.00 but then i typed the part number into ebay and got a brand new one from canada it was here in 5 days and it only cost $140.00 including postage. HA stick that mr vw. This guy in canada always has them too.

i might need to invest in one then.. ive noticed this problem more now when theres a full tank of fuel in it.. doesnt seem to do it when its near empty..

ive checked the fuses and they all look good. ive swapped the cigarette lighter fuse with fuel pump one and it still does it. i'll try the relays next.

the mechanic has checked the fuel pump and it seems to be pressurising ok, the coil that sparks into the dizzy died last week and i thought that may have been the problem but again, its still doing it. its so annoying as its so intermittent. it didnt happen once whilst at the mechanic(he left it idle for an hour and it didnt do it....)

                    cheers guys

all the relays seem fine too.

for reasons unknown, i went exploring through the engine bay today (possibly because this problem is still occuring) and i found a crack on the rotor inside the distributor cap. could this be the reason for the intermittent stalling?

sorry about the photo.. not the best camera..

the crack is about 2mm long and .25mm thick.. its basically the really dark part on the righthand side going horizontal to the photo.

my curse continues.. just got back from the USA after 8 weeks and found that my car had not been touched or looked after. it had also recieved a bath and was never dried..

basically the car was parked above a drain and the drain obviously overflowed and flooded the car.....
battery was flat and had a 6inch sespool of bacteria and all sorts of stinkyness. ive since bucketed out all the water i could and recharged the battery.

im getting it professionally cleaned today as its got mould spores and all the nasties all through the interior especially around the pools and on the seatbelts except my seat and seatbelt for some reason?

ive been advised to just flog the breaks to get all the obvious buildup of rust and whatnot off them.. ive done a few laps around the block just trying to lock it up.. its slowly getting there... for the first 10 attempts at about 50km it didnt even skid... was getting worried for a while!

its out of rego and needs a pinkslip also.. i had just got it serviced and had all the breaks and rotors replaced.. is there anything else i should do to ensure a pinkslip since this horrific flood?

ps: some of the wiring must have been affected as the power windows dont work for about 2mins after the car has started and sometimes one of the windows goes down on its own.. AND 2 of the lights on the dash that have never worked are now working..hahaah

hey mate, long time no chatty chat haha.

sounds like you're electrical issues are to do with bad earthing. its difficult to track down these kinds of faults but if i were you i'd get a cheap multi-meter from Supercheap and try measuring resistance through some of the earth paths from the devices that commonly don't work properly.

your brakes should be right with a bit of use.

bummer about getting flooded... its a good idea, and not too hard, to take out all the seats and lift the carpets. the sounds deadning/insulation should be loose under the carpet. you can remove it and sit it out in the sun for a couple of days to ensure its not going to breed mould in your car forever more.

                            good luck,

should the floor/undercarrage be waterproof? i can see that theres seals that arent..sealing..
the seals themselves are all painted so im not sure if theyve been painted to look newer or thats how they come.. are they there to drain any water from inside out or to keep water outside from getting in underneath? (sorry if this doesnt make sense )

got him rego'd with minimal hassle. one of the rear break lights was going out when i applied them if i had the lights/parkers on which the guy doing the pinkslip fixed in 20seconds as he said it was the wrong globe. other than that.. sweet as, no worries with the rust on the passenger door (will need to attend to that very soon!)

thanks for the info ayden, glad to see you can speak my language

ps: hows the gosford area.. still around that neck of the "woods"?
