  • Cupra owners, check your gear tower shift lever for cracks

Driving along the other day all is well then without any warning I'm unable to select any gears.
I open up the bonnet and find that golf club shaped shifter weight had broken free from where it mounts to the shift lever.

Next day pull the shift lever out and discover cracks in several places were caused by the heavy shifter weight twisting the lever arm off to one side.

The lever arm is basically 2 plates joined together with 2 rivets and a weld on the end. The shifter weight is only mounted to the top plate. The design is not strong enough to hold the heavy imbalanced shifter weight.

Best solution was to weld both plates together along the seams and add a little plate to help disperse the twisting stress over the whole lever.

Hope this saves someone. I managed to select 1st gear from within the engine bay and crawled the 9km back home.

my gear lever seems a bit "shifty" (as in it has way too much play, even when in gears)

thanks a lot, will check it out
