Help... car doesnt want to start.

well, i dont know wats wrong with it. its decided to stuff up during all the rain we have had in brisbane, try and turn the car over and it doesnt.. its like it wants to start but doesnt.. i found a split in the top breather pipe, been searching for a spare all over bris but on a puplic holiday, its a bit hard. do a dodgie fix with it with ducktape and it still doesnt want to start. i just dont get it. i was thinking maybe water in the dizzy cause it doesnt want to spark. any pointers ppl??

What do you mean by wants to start but doesn't?
Does it have the occasional fire but fails to come to life?

The normal checks are
-Is there spark
-Is fuel reaching the engine - electric pump on or in the tank can fail

All Seats have dizzies. At least the ones you'll find in Australia.

Coilpacks are common but you need to check for a spark and fuel.

sry, shouldve defined what car. its a '99 Seat Cupra (ibiza GTI) 16Valve. car was running fine until i ran thru a puddle in the city. got a new breatherhose coming from sydney. last 1 in aus that Audi have. itll be up here tomorrow morning. part number '037 103 231 C'.
has a split thru it thats why i was asking if that could be why the car isnt starting.
Oil light comes on as well. flashes when starting the car. its never done this either.

sry it could be a coil pack. so up in arms about it all. havnt really thought about what is what on this car.. just got it..

well fuel is def getting the engine, u put the throttle down while trying to start the car and it wants too. it turns over but doesnt start. checked all the spark plugs. they were all fine b4 the rain as well. only thing i can think of is this hose..

A breather probably wouldn't stop it starting. Can you do a picture of it?

Water shouldn't really be able to get anywhere critical but if you hit a deep enough puddle at speed who knows.

I'd take the cap off and makes sure that's dry inside.

That's the one I thought you were talking of. Mine had a big hole like that on my Toledo. Bought a new one anyway but it didnt affect the running.

My test for this snag would be to pull the king lead out of the cap and hold near the cam cover. get some one to crank it and look for a regular spark. This proves the coil is good and that the hall sender in the dissy is ok.

No spark means either the coil pack is gone or the hall sender. The hall sender feeds the ECU and that triggers the coil pack.

Assuming you get a good spark off the king lead. Then check at the plug leads. Take the plugs out and again sit them on the cam cover. Crank and look for regular sparks.

If you get them the ignition is good and it could be timing.

If you take the plugs out after the cranking they should be soaked in fuel if that side of things is good.

It will most likely be water/condensation in the coil I think. Common problem as the plastic housings crack as they age

I'm toying with the idea of getting a Cupra as a cheap thrills club racer
Never driven one so not sure what they are like - nice engine however

kk. ill check the coil pack and see if theres any water inside... should be easy enough. thou when i start and throttle alittle, it does spark and rev higher and try and start. hence why i didnt think it was the coil pack..

as said above. not my engine. mines alot cleaner. but they are a great drive. mines more like a go-kart then a car.. doesnt make a sound when cornering.. and very rarely loses power... until now that is.. haha

ill try all the tricks after i replace the hose tomorrow morning. cars just sitting in a gutter atm. as long as it doesnt get towed, its not goin anywhere..

bit off topic but you said that was the last hose in australia?? I need to replace mine which is in worse condition than yours as not only is their a slit but a whole section of the hose is missing on the top side...thanks for that part number btw and good luck with finding the solution hopefully nothing serious

cheers for the luck.. trust me. i need it.. lol. i went to audi today, its the last one so i can get it delivered to bris. the next lots they will have to buy overseas and ship them here. i got lucky i guess. but not luck if the car doesnt fix itself... haha.

its always good to know the part numbers. haha.. maybe VW will have some, unless they have the same distributor. then who knows.. but its costing my $55 to get it tomorrow. hope that helps...

well sorted it out. seems the rotor arm wasnt spinning correctly.. there is a plastic sleeve just behind it and it was restricting the arm movement. put that back on and now the car is running perfect again. still got the hose thou. was told itll help with fuel consumption cause it was breathing too much air. with it enclosed, it will run better on fuel.. so im happy.. thanks for the help guys..
