Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Weird gearstick feel in Ibiza Cupra

I'd like to hear from other Cupra drivers and anyone with similar experience on here on how your gear changes feel at the gearstick and hopefully find out what's going on with mine.
I get the feeling something is not quite right.

For starters moving the gearstick around and it feels ridiculously light almost like it isn't attached to anything? Shifting into 1st and there is no feedback at the stick no click or clunk to assure the gear is engaged it just kind of goes there.

To go from 3rd to 4th is not a straight pull back I need to pull it slightly to the right or else it may just go into 2nd.

And sometimes it doesn't want to go into 1st completely it will just kind of get stuck half way in and then trying to get it in completely feels something like trying to extend a locked elbow.

I'm interested too. I put a short shift kit in because it felt a bit like a stick in a bucket. It made it better but lately it has become notchy and hard to get into 3rd gear.

if its like earlier golfs has it got the plastic golfball on the shifter on the box? These are prone to wear out and can cause sloppy stick

mine has always been light but very direct & positive. When selecting 1st it will sometimes not go all the way in & requires pressure on the gear stick while you ease the clutch out & it will pop in.

I had a look today following the advice here Shifting GTI-VR6 cable shift linkage perfectly

I managed to fix shifting from 3rd to 4th (without accidentally getting 2nd) to line up better by loosening the centering spring bolt at the gear stick and reposition a little more to the right.

But I think the reason for the weird light feeling gear changes is because of the design with the gear stick basically pulling cables.

Coming from a Cordoba which has no cables the feeling is heavier but more solid and direct.
          Love the Cordoba

The Cupra uses a hybrid 02A/02J cable shift, which is totally different to the early rod shift design.

This is pretty much it, really. The cable shift never feels as good. The only way you can improve it is to replace the shift tower with a motorsport one
