Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Central locking replacement

My daughter has a 1999 Seat Cordoba she is having trouble with the central locking and was told she needs 2 new front activators for the doors,
Can she just go to some where like Strathfield car radio and get a genetic one installed it there place ???

Seat central locking will be vacuum operated. So there's no chance Strathfield will be able to do that. They would want to replace the lot with electric motors. This had been done on my old Toldeo and they don't have a way to do the boot, so that then doesn't unlock with the rest of the car.

Most locking problems are down to leaks in the system, there's a vac pump in the boot. These can burn out, if there's a leak the pump keep trying to maintain the vacuum and overheats before burning out. No fires, just really nasty smells.

You can trouble shoot it easy enough though. The pipes run down the sills IIRC, so following them and checking the joints is the first thing to do.
