Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • AIRBOX mod semi-complete, now needs an exhaust :) (PICS to come soon)

Hey guys, my name is Kris and i'm a newbie from canberra. Just bought a 99 Ibiza GTi Cupra for what i think was a steal, and now i'm getting started on playing around with the ABF I am going to end up sticking a 1.8 20V Turbo from a Polo GTi with the Polo gearbox attached into the Ibiza, but until that is done, i am tinkering around doing a few things to bring the ABF to life. I completed my version of the 'Swiss cheese airbox mod' which i read about on various english and US forums, but did it a little differently. Instead of drilling multiple holes in the lower half of the airbox, I dremeled out another opening in the bottom of the airbox for additional cold air to be sucked in through. The bottom of the airbox sits nicely against the driver side mudguard, took a hole saw to that to let additional cold air into the engine bay, then positioned the lower half of the airbox over this hole and viola, there's your additional cold air. I will post pics up when i get a chance. It sounds a whole heap better and definitely feels like it is picking up smoother. Have many people played with their airbox's??

Welcome Kris, hope your time with the cupra is long & fun filled!

I to had a look at the different airbox mods on the various forums & came to the conclusion that apart from sounding great they did little in the way of improving performance. I decided to be conservative, I replaced the filter with a K & N panel & drilled out the front trumpet behind the headlight to a larger diameter & fitted a larger pipe between the box & the coldair fitting behind the headlight. I considered running a second pipe down into the bottom of the front airdam but decided against it, to much mucking around for little gain.

I to like the better/deeper sound & I consider that the engine does feel stronger & doesn't run out of breath in the topend as early as it used to, this is just a seat of the pants type of feel & nothing scientific!

    anyway, enjoy.

    cheers

    Phil

You can use the cupra gearbox with a 20VT motor and it will bolt straight in
I have an AGU G4 GTI engine here if you want one.

Cheers golfloon, i already have the donor car in my brothers garage. nothing wrong with the engine.. just a lot of panel damage.. too much to fix so i'm gutting it and donating as much as i can into the Ibiza...

any tips on what will/will not go over onto the Ibiza frame?? What would be the better gearbox to use in the Ibiza? the 02A that it comes with? or the polo gti gearbox? Will there be much room for a front mount? or will my mech here in canberra have to move the radiator back a bit? I'm tossing up whether or not to switch the polo computer into the ibiza, or whether to go standalone.. any tips there??

        Cheers.

even if there's not any noticeable power gains (seat of the pants or otherwise), did you notice a difference in fluidity of power as a result of the air box mod?

i've been seriously considering tinkering with the air box abit- perhaps not the secondary air feed, but i was thinking swiss cheese+smoothing might help a little with smoothness of power delivery...

I`d use the Cupra gearbox and keep the car light and it will acellerate faster. If you are prepared to mod the pedal a hydraulic clutch setup is better than the seat massively long cable.

We are just pulling apart a Cupra that had a 20VT in it at the moment. Most of it is going into a Golf, but I have the front end panel that was modified for a full size intercooler without chopping the bar if you want it.

Pm me if you war interested.

Polo computer is a lot of wiring, standalone is probably the same amount of effort, but with more benefit. Polo GTI manifold is straight, all the others are kinked, so that will give you a bit more room too.

There are pics on here of Daves car with the 20VT in it.
