hey all, my handbreak has stopped working all of a sudden.. ive removed the leather from the stick and found that one of the bolts was way out so i lined it up with the other one.. now it alot better when pulling the stick up but it doesnt actually do anything..

my question is, is it the same as a bike break.. where the wires run parrallel to another spot before they pair off to each wheel? how do i get to it!

Methodology

Whenever you tackle a handbrake problem start at the wheel and work your way towards the lever. Levers and cables (unless the latter snap) are rarely to blame. Jack up a rear wheel, apply the handbrake and try to turn it by hand. Grab the cable if it's exposed or the cam that operates the mechanism in the drum and try to apply it from there. If this is ineffective the problem lies inside the drum. My guess is that it'll be adjusters or worn out shoes. (But that's just a guess....)

if it come on all of a sudden, it seems unlikely that it'll be worn out shoes (does the car brake ok?). if your not workin on wednesdya sometime bring it round and we'll have a look.

Does the car have rear discs or drums? Discs I think.
Check the cable is attached to the caliper and check the pads. Then check the cable is moving from each end. If yes, tighten as appropriate.
Until then, dont forget to park in gear

well.. it was working.. (JUST) before.. had to really force it past a certain bit for it to do anything.. looks like discs in the rear.
the breaks still work great. had a few close calls with retard drivers and it hasnt locked up or screeched or slid. havent felt it move or slide in the wet either.
sucks cause i dont get much wheelspin with em (was alot easier in the jetta)

i finish at 4 on wednesday aydos.. i would attempt it myslef but i dont have a jack.. i was suprised at my efforts tightening the cables at the lever

They are BRAKES mate.

If you don`t Brake, things will Break.

Most of the braking is done with the front, so don`t rule out pads in the back as being the problem.

you dont have a JACK? what is that all about? go get one immediately.... a trolley jack preferably, even if its a cheapo small one.

The jack will be under the spare wheel, under the boot carpet mate. The car has Full Service History, of course it has a Jack

hey ayden, me and a guy from work looked at the handbrake again today.. that bit at the end where the wheel is isnt moving.. he thinks the cables have seized... the cable looks like it stops moving at the same spot on both times. might need new cables.. bring on saturday!

hey everyone,

as i suspected, it was a problem at the calipers.

fixed the problem by taking off the actuating levers and rotating them back about 45deg on the splines. everything works great now.
