Speed up my ABF Please

Just got back from a weekend down the coast driving the wifes Seat Toledo 2L 16v ABF. It goes great if you keep the revs over 3000, but you then keep the speed over 100 pretty easy too.

I want it to acellerate faster and dont mind trading a bit of top end to achieve this. I have driven an 8v Toledo and it was 10 times nicer to drive around town. The clutch cable on the ABF engined SEATs lets it down as it is so long and curves round twice. They should have made em hydraulic.

I have a couple of options.

1. Put in a lightened flywheel and retain the 02A (heavy) gearbox.

2. Rip out the cable change 02A box and cableshift and put in an 020 with Golf Clutch and shorter and lighter clutch cable.

3. Put in a set of KR cams, or an exhaust cam as the intake. If anyone has any details on how successful this will be, let me know.

Its ready for a set of new engine mounts either way, so now is the time.

I`m thinking option 2 and 3 , what do you guys reckon??

I have heard that they had an extra heavy flywheel compared to other 16v's
sounds odd, but the story goes that the ABF was performing to well against the VR6, so the heavy flywheel helped to keep the ABF a bit retarded.
Maybe a swap with a KR flywheel would be a good thing for you, or sell the whole lot to me dirt cheaphttp://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/images/icons/icon12.gif & put in an 8v & 020

I think the ABF cams are pretty good already, not sure if fitting KR ones would make any difference.

A lightened flywheel would be good.

By yourself a chip from ebay.

I never felt that my MK3 16V was short on power. The response was always good IMO.

Do you use 98 fuel?

I always use 98octane.

Chip is gonna happen and exhaust suitcase is going.

The Mrs hates the heavy clutch and the cable shift and I want it to feel more nimble in acelleration.

I`m seriously leaning towards an 020 swop. Maybe a Mk2 2Y 16v gearbox.

Leave the cable change box mate, get the gear and convert it to hydraulic.

Stick some lower profile tyres on it for a bit more acceleration.

I find that my Beeza has really good torque. Maybe it is just enough lighter to make it work better. Put yours on a dyno and see if it is giving its best. If so I suggest 2 options.

!. Put a lower final drive ratio in the existing gearbox with a new clutch cable maybe.

2. Take the head off and bump up the compression ratio a bit.

Agree with Gav about the tyres Nexen N3000 are good. Flywheel you already have I think and the KR cams don't bother seriously.

Get a new clutch cable for a start Some of them are rubbish, and others are smooth as butter - you must have the former

Not worth the KR cam swap - if you want more pull down low at the expense of top end, fit a 9a or PL inlet cam.

I don't think that's a good idea, though. The slugginess is from over-long gearing and a 22lb flywheel - fix that and they have plenty of torque down low

Leave the compression alone or you'll encounter major detonation problems with that engine management

The hydraulic thing is a good idea Gav, but if I`m gonna change the ratios, surely 020 is way to go. Gearbox is lighter, so is flywheel, and cable is shorter and heaps cheaper. Plus the gearbox is a third of the price and I have several of em.

I have a 9a intake cam lying around, I`m up for that if you reckon it`ll help.

Lower profile tyres wont help the ride on Sydneys crappy roads. I`m running 205 45 16s atm.

If it was me i'd do the flywheel and try a chip out. Not to expensive and should make it a little more responsive.

9Acam is softer. KR is the lumpiest one without going exhaust cam. I have brand new slave cylinder in the shed, I'll swap it for some old crap you have lying on the floor.
