Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Tyre recommendation for SEAT ibiza GTI Cupra

    Hi All,

I am expecting to take delivery of my new Ibiza GTi Cupra tonight! Yeeehhaaaa!
The only thing it needs to RWC is one front tyre, I figure I will replace at least the two front tyres (the rear are perfect) and wondered what was best for round town driving...and I guess I don't want to go with the top of the line either as the bak account has just taken a beating buying the beast!

It is currently running 205x45x16 Falkens (I am pretty sure). Any thoughts?

After some ringing around and some Googling, it looks like the Falken ze912 is the right tyre...it seems to be an OK price and has low road noise with decent handling characteristics. Thoughts?

I put a set of Toyo Proxes on mine around a year ago. Paid $155.00 each. I think they are more now. Pretty happy with them.

I had Kumhos on prior to that. They were good in the wet and bad in the dry when new. And crook in the wet once they had worn down but were fantastic in the dry. To be expected I suppose. They seemed to wear out pretty quickly though.

The Toyos have been much more consistent with the grip levels. A bit slippery in the dry when pushing when new but they have settled down now. The wear rate seems a lot better than the Kumhos.

I had some second hand Contis (off a Polo GTI) on for a while until I had a blow out. They were pretty good when they had worn down a bit.

I have proxes T1R on my cupra & agree with everything Bora Sport said about them, I find that the car does move around on the tread a little when you are pushing them more than being slippery but it's not a problem, just took a little time for me to get used to. I find them very good.

Prior to that, falkens, loved them & only switched to the Toyo's because the falkens weren't available in the size I wanted when I needed them.

& congrats on the buy, enjoy. I still love getting in my cupra everyday.

      post some picks soon.

Thanks for the recommendations, I have booked it in to get Falklen ze912's put on the front (they are the replacements for the ze392 currently on the car and they seem to be alot of fun!). The next thing is to find out what is rattling under the passenger seat...I think it might be a loose bolt from the exhaust (or maybe the cat) as it seems to be most annoying at 2,800rpm!

Dont driver her so hard! An impossible request i imagine!

I hope everything is going well with her otherwise and let me know what that rattle was!

As for the tyre I think they were great and never had a problem in the wet or dry however Falkens tend to be softer compound and wear out faster but Canberra driving means not a lot of ks...

Hope you are enjoying the car!

If the rattle is the same as mine it will be the heat shield on the down pipe (exhaust). Mine rattles at almost exactly 2,800 rpm. It is in the shop at the moment to get it fixed along with a few other mods. Easiest fix is a big hose clamp around the heat shield. I should be able to give some more details in the next day or so,

I hope that is it! Should hopefully be a cheap fix then. Mine is in on Monday to get looked at.

Yes, Absolutely. Just want to get those couple of things looked at, exhaust rattle and the power steering seems to be getting worse at slower speeds too (parking lot speed).

Power steering pump belt gets loose on occasion... just needs tighting up i think/hope!

Hopefully all easy fixes, or just keep the revs up a touch when slow speed turning.

Where do I tighten it? Or should I get someone else to do it (ie. a mechanic)?

Sweet, thanks! I look forward to hopefully hearing that it was easy. Cheers.

It requires some effort (jack up front etc.), might ask a mechanic to check it out given they should be able to do it in like 10seconds.

Had mine checked out and it is actaully the baffles in the Remus rear muffler, Arrghhhh!. Also discovered that the 4 rotors need replacing! I wish had been as simple as a heat shield.

Found that it wasn't the heat shield or the baffles in the rear muffler! It was the brace in the middle of the car (just past the CAT), the rubber on the brace had perished. Replaced that and it is sweet...free too! Thanks to the mob in Belconnen for that!

So can i have her back now? Hehe - just kidding!
