  • Audi TT 1.8t

    Hi everyone,

Just wondering if theres any good info about getting some tuning on my 1.8T. I'm racing it in my local Canberra Hillclimb, currently hooked up with a GFB Electronic Boost controller and its absolutely horrible. I'm running 8PSI at the moment and if i turn up some more it sounds like its prematurely letting off the boost. I've done some boost leak testing and im 80% certain its not that. Ive got the AUM 110kw of the 1.8T (Bad choice but im trying to change that now)

I went to go look at a APR tune but of course they decided to have a legal battle as of late.

Any information and tuning advice is much appreciated. Are there any other companies around?

So far ive got TIP, K04001 Turbo, GFB electronic boost controller, Aftermarket DV, Full delete -(SIA, N624, N75, SAI, EVAP all deleted)- Coilovers, catch can, rear weight removal, Full Turbo back exhaust (with 3" dump, 100 cell cat down to 2.5" out to the back). All the work I've done myself exhaust the exhaust.

    Thank you

With a car that modified you would be wise to tune it on a local dyno. An off the shelf tune is going to assume you have things like the N75 system in-place. Personally I'd be scared to remote tune your car outside the live service, in real time on a dyno.

Good work on doing all the DIY stuff

You really need to get the n75 back on there as yes... you've already seen that the EBC is a piece of ****e on this machine.

The ECU will be seeing all sorts of incorrect info without the N75 system in place hence your running problems.

Also with all the other sensors deleted, have you made the necessary software changes so the ECU isn't searching for them? Otherwise you will be throwing CEL's galore which then could be contributing to the bad running of the car.

If you're in Canberra why don't you visit Ed in Sydney or get in touch w/ Gavin who is on this forum too. He'll be able to help with 1.8t tuning for sure but you'll have to send your ECU up to him.

Unfortunately, you have gone about this completely backwards. You should be buying a lottery ticket though as the motor hasn't blown yet!!

As mentioned you need N75 putting back on the car. Then sell the EBC to someone who is into JDM.

To run that K04 you need a 3 inch MAF housing, a better fuel pump and bigger injectors.

APR couldn't help you with a tune for it as it stands anyway.

I wouldn't want to get involved either, without being able to get hands on with the car. I seriously recommend that you don't put the boot in until you have it tuned properly.

Happy to give advice, just ask the right questions.

        Gavin

Now is probably the best time to put in a stand alone ecu and be able to tune it to your requirements and future mods.

There's no need to go standalone and lose all the factory features. I'll concede there isn't someone on every street corner that can tune the ME7 ECU but this is far from exotic enough to need thousands spending on it.

Thanks everyone for the input. I should have posted a year ago.

Apologies for being unclear. I would re-attach the n75, n249, back to the engine to allow for the ECU to control the car once i got a tune. Yes, I will definitely be selling the EBC, even though i have to say, i do enjoy this GFB version.

I did own a mk4 golf 1.8t in the past that ive had tuned before by APR. I got a stage 1 i beleive and i enjoyed the extra gains, but i would like to go a little further with my TT (what modder has never said that before )

The K04001 isnt like the larger K04 found on the 225 (ko4022?) i beleive, its only slightly bigger and ive read it does run ok on a stock 1.8t tune (obviously without gains until tuned further). I agree i will need to find some bigger injectors and a 3" MAF.

I have looked at the Franken Turbo website from the states. The prices there look quite affordable, yet i know affordability doesnt ensure quality. Take my old $300 3" Turbo back exhaust from ebay for example

I suppose i am trying to aim around the 150kw+ mark to be able to foot it at my local motorsports. I would rather lighten up my car and improve the handling and more so braking before i go any further than 180+.

I was thinking a trip up to Sydney may be my best bet for tuning options. Does anyone know how i can contact Ed? or any reliable places, google is great but first hand encounters are more reliable.

Again, your help is fantastic. Beers all round

Parso Rex - Mark at Recode in Sydney would be the guy I know to handle a custom tune in real time on a dyno, but expect to be told to repair some of the factory systems or pay a bit to tune all those deletions out properly.

!50+kw shouldn't be too hard. I reckon you can get close to that on a Polo GTI with standard injectors and standard turbo with a stage 2 tune, downpipe zorst etc.

Thanks for all the info guys, I went quite for a while having a think and finally came up with an option.

Today i bought myself a wrecked 225 (BAM engine) quattro audi tt from Milperrra Pickles Auctions and just towed it home.
So now i have acess to a lot of the stuff i need. However, i think im creating more problems for myself in the meantime haha.

I was thinking just straight swap in the bigger MAF, injectors, dual intercoolers, the K04-022 turbo and manifold etc and then go get it tuned. This was why i bought the wreck as i got the whole car cheaper than all the parts i would have needed seperately.

Next i thought to myself "But quattro" so i might as well do a full engine swap, swap in the quattro (If its possible to mount it up to non quattro), ECU, everything into my working car and then pray that its happy and turn the key.

Or to add in some more thinking time.... I keep the wrecked car and swap bits into it. It came from the auctions as a WOVR N/A which I think that means i can register it again without having to pass a detailed write off inspection. However, this means getting a whole new dash (airbags went off and ruined it and the steering wheel), swapping in a new front end support brackets, Fenders, bonnet, new headlights, radiator, aircon radiator, various other bits and peices and one of the side mount intercoolers, then reset the computer etc. This is all if the frame isnt bent underneath and the engine isnt ****ed as well (which it doesnt look like on a quick inspection)

I only got the car today so ive been doing a lot of thinking but theres definitely some fun spanner spinning to come. Would welcome anyones thought or ideas

                      Cheers all!

but sounds like a fun project if you're going to do the conversion!

Very true, i did realise that once i bought the wrecked 225 TT, and i realised a few other things.

I ended up leaving my own 1.8T engine in the TT and started to convert all the auxillaries to do with the 225 over to it. Its taken me two weeks and i only just finished custom fabricating the Down pipe from the trubo to my aftermarket exhaust today. I have learnt S**T loads in the past few weeks on the engines and how bloody different they are just from one to the other, but in essence i suppose they have to be to make sure they are perfect for each application.

Anyway, I've been in contact with GIAC in Sydney and looks like I will head up there next week to get my new goodies tuned in. The only difference is that i dont have Quattro or the 6 speed gearbox. However, I've looked at this in a good way. With less weight and a harder tune than just 165kw the car will be quite quick and will be a little different in comparison to other 225 TT's out there, which is what i really wanted to aim for all along.

Fingers crossed it all goes well and the results are what im looking for. Thanks again for everyones help.

Good question! So there are a LOT of differences between the 225 K04 1.8t's and my old K03 1.8t.

To get the dual side mount intercoolers i had to swap over the intake manifolds so i could have the throttle body on the passengers side of the car, and in doing this i had to rewire a lot of the sensors so they would have the right length to fit.

Not only the turbo swap to the bigger K04, but exhaust manifolds, changing the n265 and n75 over as they both sat in vaguely different spots. A lot of the intercooler piping i had to fabricate because i had broken pipes from the front end damaged wrecked TT i bought for the parts. Injectors (although i havent put these in yet) to suit the bigger turbo with the tune, along with the 3" MAF. It also took me all day from 8.30am to about 5pm to fabricate the dump pipe from the wrecked TT to suit my aftermarket exhaust, a lot of fitting, cutting, welding, refitting and measuring.

That was pretty much it. Was a much bigger job than i first anticipated but it was fun and i learnt a heap.
