Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • C5 A6 Allroad questions

    Hey peeps.

I don't know whats come over me, but I'm considering selling the skoda and getting either a Scout or an Allroad. God knows why. Diesel ofcourse.

Just wondering if anyone else has some C5 A6 experience to offer. It seems like the internet calls the main engine issue camshaft wear (I can live with that, looks like good aftermarket kits are about $1200) but the auto box is a bit of a gray area for me (the 5 speed tiptronic). (Seems like theres no aussie manual allroad diesels at all).

The cars look to be good value, (lot of car for 10-15k!, even if they are 10-12 years old now) but theres part of me saying don't go there.

Why am I even considering one? Well, we frequent dirt/rough roads in the octy, and I'm a bit anal about it so it kills me a little inside every time I get more stonechips etc. Also, the Octy currently sits in the garage all week, pretty much only gets used on weekends so the difference in fuel economy isnt really a factor. Additionally, we do enjoy camping in middle of nowhere / hard to reach places, and usually this means carpooling with our friends who have a subaru... frankly I'd love to be able to be a bit more independent in these scenarios (we always end up cutting down on the gear we take).

Massive towing capability would be another bonus.

Someone talk me into/out of it.!

Try asking your question over here, might actually have a few Audi owners with that car:

Thanks - bit of a check and looks like my research over the last few days has turned up pretty much everything that could cause me problems.

I have looked at one already that was mechanically perfect but a little tired trim wise, but I'm (and the wife) is pretty keen so we are going to take a second look I think.

Yes I think the diesel is basically impossible to find in manual. Good to know there are some petrol manuals though, as a conversion is therefore doable for me.

So I cut a deal last night for an '03 V6 TDI - my first Audi! Woo!
