  • A3 2.0T DSG or Quattro Manual (2006-2007)

    im in the market for a new car. im confused whether to go for the DSG (FWD) or manual (QUATTRO). Future upgrades will be an APR upgrade only. im worried about wheel spin and the annoying feeling of not being able to control the power in the DSG (in Drive) althought 0-100 times are appealing to me.
    Red Book states something like 9.2 Sec for the manual Quattro. Is it possible to be so slow? Have Red Book go it all wrong?
    i do 80k's of driving a day so changing gears in traffic would so my head in if i did end up with a manual. The DSG would be the ideal car although with manual i feel so much more in control. Also the fact that i dont have to worry about possible DSG issues in the future.

    i have not been looking at the DSG Quattro as its out of my price range for now.

    i would like to get some feedback on what people think of both transmissions especially when tuned & does anyone have a 0-100 time on the quattro in Manual.

    The manual box in the VAG cars is pretty good. From 2001 onwards. I am on my 3rd manual VAG car and they keep getting better.

    What type of driving is the 80k's? Parramtta road or bells line of road? Still, you get used to manual in traffic, the clutch is pretty light. best thing to do is drive one, but you will fall in love straight away so be careful.

    0-100 times will always be slower in an AWD. More metal to get moving and initial inertia, more friction in the drive train. I would be more concerned with 20-100 time splits, unless you intend to take everyone at a set of lights from stand still. WAD will accellerate better once moving, but form a standstill, will always be slower. If you have half decent tyres on a FWD, you shouldnt be getting too much wheel spin with the traction control anyway. Unless you turn it off of course....

    The Quattro will be better in a set of twisties (bells line of road), but unless you are approaching the limit of those tyres, the FWD will fair quite well. Audi tend to set the quattros up with understeer bias anyway unless you are in the S or RS range.

    If you are going the APR route, you should get close to 30%+ power increase and all important torque (I got about 50% on the 1.8T) so that changes everything anyway.

    My suggestion is, drive a FWD DSG, then drive the quattro manual.

    I drove the DSG version of my current vRS and DSG's and I just dont get along, it was nice, but he manual is soooo much better. And I live in inner city Melbourne where peak hour traffic takes me 50-60 mins to drive the 15KM to the city. I wouldnt swap the manual for the world.

    Look at it this way, you are buying a car you will be passionate about, do you give up the manual and enjoyment from that transmission on your weekend drives, for some convenience during the week? If the auto is needed that much, buy a 20yr old second car for 3 K with an auto box, and then get the manual for the weekends.

      i get traffic although it does flow. i have test driven a FWD just need to get my hands on a quattro. thanks for the reply!

        2005 Audi A3 8P Ambition Direct-Shift Gearbox Quattro

        btw a A3 2.0T Quattro Manual is more like 0-100 7.2s. Redbook typo I think! From memory with APR Stage 1 an improvement of 0.5-0.8s
