  • 42DD downpipe fitted on my S3....

Hurried round to Greg's yesterday, after avidly watching the progress of my downpipe on TNTs website. Luckily it arrived during my 3 days off, so no looking at it in the box waiting to fit it.

I completely ignored Jimmys advice to do it on a lift, being an impatient sort and all that. So after tea last night I launched into pulling out the old twin cats and downpipe.

Finished up dropping the subframe and unbolting the steering rack to get the old pipe out. Getting to some of the nuts was tough, just glad to have a tool box full of Snap On goodies, wobble sockets and stuff. An impossible job otherwise.

So that was 2 hours last night.

I got another 2 in this morning and finished bolting stuff back in place. I was concerned that the new pipe being 3 inch would be knocking on everything but I needn't have worried, it fits perfectly. I spotted a split boot on a track rod so I fitted a new one, been in the cupboard for 2 years, a cheap box filler from ECS.

There was a bit of underbonnet smoke from the new downpipe but that soon cleared.

I need to drive it a bit longer to really assess the changes but it'll fire up full boost at 2800 in 6th. Which is the kind of driving I do on the highway, a full boot without changing down.

Old one out and new one ready to go in.

    New one fitted.

It was hard graft doing it on the floor, could be a lot quicker on a second one but I really hope I don't have to!

I will probably do the exhaust sometime in the future. I am 44 next month and got over loud exhausts a very long time ago. My wife just took off to the shops and it sounds pretty quiet, which I like.

I have a cold air intake, a Green Cotton Tornado, which is a cone filter in an aluminium box. There's a flexy pipe running into the wing.

Custom-Code/Forge DV and of course Custom-Code Phase 1. Will leave that be just for now. I will advance the timing over winter with custom settings. It's going better this afternoon than on the way to work this morning. You can feel the improved spool at all rpms. Boost comes on much quicker.

Be handy of there was an off the shelf one. I could get the TT mid section and have a rear box made I suppose.

Taking the centre silencer out would do hardly anything Clay, used to do it loads in the UK. The back box is the width of the car and nothing there would be like having an open pipe.

I could do either myself but know it's not what I am looking for, it would be unbearable. Plus my neighbours wouldn't like me setting off for work at 4am I am sure.

I am not in a rush, so I can get it right.

                        Gavin,

Im using a muffler called dynomax VT. Its a straight through muffler with a spring loaded butterfly, opens up according to exhaust backpressure.

This is my honest feedback. For now, my A4 sounds horrible at at throttle lift off because of the downpipe goes from 2 1/4 inch to a hollowed cat, goes back to 2 1/4 inch and then 3inch all the way back to a resonator and lastly the dynomax VT muffler. I think a mid section muffler will fix that and also when i install the psi turbo kit(proper 2.5inch downpipe), which hopefully be completed by next week when all the little thing arrived.

The butterfly inside has a tendency to rattle but it is not that obvious. Once I get that sorted, it should sound a lot better and with the mid section muffler, even more quieter. It does get loud @ WOT.

                        Here's a test done with a decibel meter :-

Haha, well Milltek do a "special pipes" version which looks pretty decent? I'm getting my cat back fitted on Saturday and it's barely into 4 figures. Was going to do the downpipe but I am going BT instead.
