  • Audi 80 ? ?

    hey guys i own a vw golf gti but ive been looking into these audi 80's

    can some one tell me the differrences between each model and which year model is the best to have.

    if anyone has had one and can give me some idea of how they are to live with that would be great

    Pre 1987 Are Boxy but light. Same engine as Golf GTI of the same year with kjet. They rust if neglected.

    1988-1996ish More Bubbly shape and more electric toys. Still a 1.8 or 2L Golf GTI motor with kejet injection. 1.9S is a nice model 1.9 engine with a different cam.

    AUTOS on them all are disasterous. They all break are VERY expensive to relplace and spit diffs pretty often tooo.

    Manuals are Rarer, but a much better proposition.

    Audi 90 is same shape but 5 cylinder engine 2.3L. Again the Autos are shocking.

    Electric windows fail too and check out whether the climate control works.

    No rust on the post 1988 cars, they are galvanised.

      Ok,what about the 2.6L V6 versions are they any good ? ?

        A lot more complicated, expensive to service.

        Still have woeful autos.

        VW just dont make very good Automatics IMO. They do make great Manual boxes however.

          I owned a 1994 Audi 80 V6 (2.6l) quattro. Don't be put off by the expensive euro tag. These cars are well-built, robust and very safe (passive and active safety mechanisms). Yes, they have more fruit than than a Jap of the same era and, if neglected, they are expensive to repair.

          The Aussie-delivered 1992-95 Audi 80/90 vehicles are generally the pick of the offering. The Audi 90 (B3 series) was fitted with a 10v or 20v 5-cylinder engine - both are well-known for their reliability if properly maintained. The Audi 80 (B4 series) was fitted with a 2 litre 4-cylinder, a 2.6 litre V6 or 2.8 litre V6. The bigger engine was used with a FWD automatic gearboxes. The smaller V6 was used with a manual gearbox and quattro system. The best has to be the later 1994/95 80 V6 quattro. These cars are not drag-strip capable rather high-speed cruisers.

          If you are interested in buying a particular car, have a local Audi technician check it out. Also try oZaudi.com.au for support and for second-hand car sales.

              I read in a UK mag that Audi 80s are very reliable compared to the A4 that came after.

              They still look quite modern IMO

                Ive had this model audi in my head lately too, think ive been watching to many group B audi vids. Can't get enough of that bark, love that sound.

                  I drover past a local car dealer today and saw and Audi 80, so i stopped nd had a look. Looked in very good condition, well looked after. it was a 2.6 v6 model but was an auto.

                  I got me thinking, how well badged are the quattro versions? i didnt think to look underneath at the time to see if it was all-wheel drive.

                  I am pretty sure it was the B4 shape. Dealer had $5990 on it.

                    I had one ....see?

                    My Audi 90 2.3l 5cyl was a great car - yes 5cyl ...north/south configuration and front wheel drive. Who else but Audi? I bought it when it was 5 years old for half the new car price. I had it for 11 years before trading it in on the Jetta. Like any car you need to maintain them. I ran it on premium - extra 100k on the tank -and serviced it regularly.
                    The only downside I new about and didn't act soon enough was the the fact that the trasmission cooler for the auto is in the bottom tank of the radiator and guess what ..... I ended up with coolant in the transmission and transmission fluid in the radiator. That cost me a $3000 rebuild. But apart from that, no major problems in 250,000 klm. I got close to 600k on a tank around town and 12k/l 35mpg on a country run. ...and very comfortable too.
