Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • What is the difference between...

    Hi everyone,

I am going to look at a 1998 Audi A3 turbo this weekend. It has only done 100,000 km's.

There is another one I will look at, a 2000 A3 turbo. Was there any variations between these years? I noticed that the climate control units are different in the pictures...

The 2000 one has 150,000 kms on it. It has a sun roof too. They are for the same price.

If I knew a bit more about the differences between the years it would help me make my decision.

    Thanks guys!

I reckon the 2000 model might be a drive by wire one, that has a variable valve timing head on it.

Get the engine numbers from the service book to check this. The 1998 will be an AGU engine for sure, the 2000 probably isn't.

So which would be the better one? If I look on carsales for the specs of the '98 one, it says :

      Variable valve actuation: Variable timing

Thanks I didn't know the redbook had specs.

So both have the 'AGU' engine. Is there anything wrong with this engine, or anything I should look out for?

mine has the agu motor(sweet motor,no major hassles) and is cable driven, not drive by wire. which one had the variable valve timing?? that would be better, but it has more k's right?
have you looked at the a3 thats forsale on here???

                hey thanks for the link!

Why would you go for the gti over the audi? I'm looking for others opinions to help make a dicision. Tomorrow I'm going to look at both a gti and an a3.

                  A '98 has two doors.
                  2000 has four.
