Get yourself down to the Garden Centre for a Money Tree and make it a big one.

As with any secondhand car you get good and bad ones.

An impeccable service history would be on my list of needs. Belt changes need to be done and are time consuming so pricey at Audi, independents will be much cheaper.

I don't read much about them but haven't seen lots of horror stories.

Leaky tappet covers, boost leaks, upper control arm links, bit dear to service especially timing belt time, but in general they are very strong. Not a lot for sale so do your home work and have it inspected as the sellers can afford to ask for top dollar. I agree with the servicing, if its good and honest these things are bloody strong, i would have one no probs and have bucket loads of torque, and tune well.

Amazing aftermarket options as well. At 100k miles they typically need new turbos and a clutch, which require pulling the engine to do. A basic k04-RS4 conversion is a very popular mod setup which includes k04 turbos instead of k03's, full exhausts from turbo back and adequate fueling arrangements to power everything. They make monster power and are probably one of the most tunable Audi's ever.

Major things that go bad - turbos, clutch , timing belt and control arms. If you get one, set aside money for new turbos and clutch. These cars really only turn into money pits because you'll continue to justify aftermarket upgrades. IE: "My k03s are dead, might as well get k04s" etc...

bah diy with a few mates at home heheh.

same thing with the R33 GTR people said you had to pull the engine to change to the turbos - crap you could drop the gearbox and jack the engine up to egt enough room.

mate had one went hard traded it in when it go to expensive to maintain on an S6 audi dealers would rape and pillage. Best to find a reasonably priced independent. Motor Mag had a piece on them a while back in the under 30k performance bargains. If you can find one that has been babied with a good service record could be a good buy. Couple of RS4's on carsales which is rare at the moment.

I know the driveline is not an issue with many tuned examples over seas copping clutch dumps at redline with no drama's. I would love one as a project car but the rarity is an issue for Oz.

Have not heard of any great reliability issues though.

But damn they are monsters!! In Europe they have a huge following. The engine internals on many handle up to 600 hp with stock bottom end! Throw on some K04S turbo's and fuel system to suit and you have 460 hp.
