Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

    quattro differentials ??

    diffs !!!! is it my ears or what ???
    im sure there is a noise in the rear diff ? is this commen on an 97 a4 quattro ?
    and would they pick it up on a routine new car licence car inspection ! (not sure what you call it over in the eastern states ) the noise is not loud and doesnt sound like a old holden diff , but there is some noise there , i cant seem to get under it and check oils or what ever , whats the deal !!!

    Ok mate there is check and drain plugs , 17mm hex same as gearbox. Yeah the odd one did whine but not common. Case hardening was the cause on the odd one. You can buy products to quiten it doen for a while before you decide on a costly overhaul.

      cheers for the input ,was going through the receits and when it was serviced it was mentiond there was a minimal noise there (2006), what would a overhaul set me back ?
