Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Bull dust! ?

I recently drove on a dirt road with my new Jetta, thru a national park, so I was expecting dirt and bugs etc at the end.
When I get back to town, I took it through a spray wash, but when I got home and opened the door, there was a film of dust across all the door sills & jambs, between the outer door seal and the inner seal. (so the seals kept the water spray out)
I didn't take photos and have rinsed it off, but in the photo below the red area highlighted, and attached spaces is where the dust was (and similar for all doors).
    Door jamb IMAG0811.jpg

This is the front bottom outer door seal
    Door seal IMAG0813.jpg
There is no outer seal on the front edge and that bottom seal doesn't look like it will keep anything out.

The outer seals in general don't look like they are pressed particularly tight against the sill/jamb.

    Is this normal?

Is my expectation that fine bull dust should be keep out too high?

Looks pretty normal to me, I've never owned a car where the door sills and jambs didn't get dirty. I just wipe mine down with a damp cloth when I finish washing the car.

    Cheers

If you look at your second picture you will notice the rubber seal attached to the door finishes short of the front edge, meaning dust will get in.

I live at the end of a dirt road, which turns to a fine powder during dry periods. While I get dust where you indicated (far less than other cars we've owned) very little gets inside (again, far less than other cars). I think the Jetta is remarkably well sealed.

I have an old chamois reserved for wiping down sill areas as part of the wash process. And, the guy who comes into work to detail our cars advertises his washes include the door seals.

        All perfectly normal...
