Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Boot lid open-all-the-way issues

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and I need some advice / opinion.

The short story is that when I was looking to buy a Jetta (mkVI) one dealership showed me how one of the functions was if I held the open boot button down on the key fob the boot would not just pop, but swing all the way up, and I swear I recall him showing me it happen on the spot with one of their demos. However when I bought my Jetta I couldn't replicate this feature, I went to my dealer and posed the question to my salesman and he knew nothing off it and couldn't make it happen either.
Am I going crazy or is this actually a thing?
What I have noticed with my Jetta now I've owned it for a while and used the boot a bit, is the signs of scratching on the latch housing, consistent with a slightly miss-aligned boot, I think that maybe the boot is catching on the friction of the latch and not swinging properly.

I am going to my dealership at the end of this week with another un-related ongoing issue and wanted to be well armed with this info before I went.

My other issue if you can still be bothered reading is that my roof lining at the rear is coming out of it seals / possible collapsing, I think it is to do with dodgy C-pillars, but the dealership assured me it was the roof lining and have replaced it once for me, but it has since happened again. Has anyone else had these issues? thoughts?

Cheers all, Brad (sorry for the long post)

Unfortunately, I don't think the boot is meant to swing open automatically.. I know mine doesnt!

What happens for me is that sometimes it opens fully and sometimes it doesnt. I know for a fact when your on a slope facing upward, something to do with gravity, the boot lid pops all the way up. But when on a flat surface no. It doesnt go all the way up. I had the same issue with you at the dealer. He demonstrated it being able to pop up all the way, but couldnt when i tried. But thats normal. I dont suppose our jettas are meant to be able to do that.

          New project!

I'm gonna try and attach a spring somewhere and see if it can force the boot to popup. LOL!

The boot is supposed to swing open automatically. It usually is "sometimeish" on my vehicle. Usually depended on temperature of day when I just got my jetta.

Adjusting the spring like Ziggyboy is about to is supposed to fix it so that it opens all the time.

Not sure whether the dealer managed to sort you out but can confirm that my jetta doesn't have her boot swing all the way up when u either press the open boot button or from the tailgate release.

P.s. - I use the boot often too. Love the space !

on the jetta, it's not one of those that is electronically assisted, so it really depends on all sorts of factors (hot/cold, slope facing upward/downward etc)
i thought the same and had my dealer replace the boot struts under warranty a few months after i bought my car..but less than a month later, it was back to the same.

you could as someone mentioned adjust the spring or get after market boots etc..but i wouldn't bother. the knowledge that it doesn't pop fully automatically is fine with me. it's just meant to pop open just like the hood..and then the struts assist the opening and keep it open.

On my MY08 Jetta it usually opens by itself if it is clean. If rain drops are on it, it won't open so, it may also be due to weight example dust on the boot etc or as dodobird said slight inclination may also contribute, to why it opens sometime and not others.
