1.4 118kW v 1.8 118kW

Hi all,

Just wondering what people think about the 1.4 Twincharged 118kW enigines in the Jetta/golf compared to the 1.8TSI 118kW engines in the Passat/Octavia.

I was thinking that that the 1.4 might be smoother down low but might have to work harder and may not have the longevity.

I would be fairly surprised if the 1.4 is smoother than the 1.8 - the nature of its makeup means that it requires boost to make torque, and that means a lot of technology has to work perfectly to get it to deliver smooth power.


As a comparison, heres a dyno plot (same shop, very similar weather) from my old mk3 turbo diesel -
quite similar numbers and rev-range to the 1.4, but see how my old diesel with greater displacement, only 2 valves per cylinder, sizeable turbocharger and mechanical fuel pump makes a much smoother torque curve because there are fewer feedback loops interacting with eachother (very simplistically). (just FIY, the 2 curves are so different because I increased fuelling after the first run)

Definately the 1.4 has to work harder... not necessarily is that a bad thing though.

I don't think it matters on a practicable level, and if you intend to do the sorts of mileages where it will matter, you'd be better off with the TDI anyway.

Get an ECU software update (i.e. APR Stage 1) and the 1.4L is a very fun little racing car to drive.

0-100kph comes in about 6.8 seconds compared to 8.0 stock, similar to the GTI.

Probably the 1.4 is more economical than the 1.8 on the highway?

I average 6.9l/100 although I don't drive like an old lady

3-4 on the freeway (cruise control).

I know the torque for the 1.8lt TSI is 250, does anyone know what the 1.4lt is?
