Need some tips/advice in removing bulbs from map lights

Hey guys,

Need some help/tips/guidance in removing the T10 bulbs from the map lights. I managed to remove the cover but the bulbs are wedged quite deep in, leaving me no grip to pull them out. I've tried pulling from different angles and using various tools but to no avail.

Seems like the only way is to remove dome reflector, which I don't know how to pull it off.

What do you reckon?

Hi frozze. Those should just be wedge T10's. I've got a 118TSI with no sunroof so I'm unsure if your overhead console is different. You can wrap masking tape on pliers and pull them straight out gently. Wiggle the bulb while pulling outwards.

Hi Ziggy. Yeah they're the T10 wedge bulbs. I could be wrong but I'm sure the map lighting in my car is identical to yours.

I tried something in similiar vein, used pliers wrapped with cling fim but I couldnt wiggle it out! Maybe I didnt apply enough pressure but I couldnt get a firm grip on the bulb due to its tight location.

My V-LEDs should be arriving anytime soon!

sounds a lot easier to pull the roof console out.

in my mk jetta: should be similar
pry off the cover from the speaker looking grille. it hinges on the front, so sratrt from back corners.
undo the 2 tork screws
console can now be taken out.
just unclip the wiring harness.
pretty sure from memory that the map lights just twists out of the sockets.
the T10 wedge bulbs push into a plastc housing that twists into a socket - they can be hard to pull out of this housing

I'm not really a tools-handy guy! I'm pretty sure I'll crack something like how I cracked my passenger's side mirror while trying to pry it out to get to the puddle light bulb. Kinda paranoid now with prying things open.

LOL... I did the same thing fixing my mums cracked side mirror. I busted the 1st glass when using my fingers... lucky I had a spare as my sisters had hers damaged by a passing car. The trick is use Allen Keys to get behind the side mirror and use them as hooks to pull the mirror off the housing.

if you brake a bulb then pulling the roof console out will be your only option otherwise you will damage the reflecors.
go and read a Mk6 Guide on LED light upgrades... ther should be one that shows you pics of how to pull the roof console out.

It is pretty simply

I pulled apart my Roof Console and A-pillar trim out and center console out from memory after reading the guides a few time when I did my Bluetooth kit install. I am capable at doing this... but the guides really help those that are less capable.

Use the guides as reference to pics to see where the clips are so you know where to unclip bits. If you don't have the blue plastic trim removal tools ($18.95 at SuperCheap Auto) then use a thin butter knife (no cutting serations) and NEVER use a flat screw driver. Butter knife is wide and quite a useful tool. Most damage is done by screwdrivers being forced into the thin gaps leaving marks.

Ouch! I'm thinking of trying again but I don't wanna risk paying $110 for another mirror replacement! !$#@%$

I got some plastic trim removal from eBay and they've been useful so far but I stopped many times whenever I feel like I need to put extra strength to pull something out.

With regards to the Mk6 LED Guide, are you referring to the one on the Vortex forum? I posted a question there never got a definitive answer except for "you need to grip it hard and pull it out" --> which I've tried numerous times!

I'll probably just wait and see if I could get the dealer to pull the bulb out when I drop it in for some checks..

I've been buying my LEDs from V-LEDS.com. They're a bit expensive but I think they're better made (most of them have heatsink) and I get to choose the temperature of the bulb. Most of the eBay bulbs are rated around 6000k which produces a blue-y tinge that I don't like. Makes it look fake, IMO. With V-LEDS, I opted for the 5000k bulbs and they give a nice bright white light without the ugly blue tinge. I've purchased about $150 worth of bulbs from them and none have failed so far but I do get error codes on my license plate and occasionally from the parkers.

Aerpro have a big range available at SuperCheap. I bought them and they are brilliant, cost about $22/pr from memory.
