Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Airbag compatability for Paddle Wheel

    Hi

I have a 2013 Jetta 147 TSI Highline which I want to add a paddle shift steering wheel to.

I bought a 2012 Passat wheel with shifters from Europe (no airbag) which I thought would be compatible with my Jetta airbag - it looked the identical style in the pics... the problem is the Passat steering wheel has lugs for an airbag which has metal clips on the back, whereas the Jetta has the clips on the wheel (and the airbag has plastic lugs). So the next thought is to acquire an airbag locally which fits the passat paddle wheel. I also want to be sure that my SWCM is compatible with whatever I do....

    Can anyone provide some advice? My Jetta SWCM is a 5K0 953 549B, and it's current airbag is a 5C0 959 655C.
The Passat MFSW wheel I have with the paddles is 3C8 419 091 BF E74.

It looks like a lot of locals have used a GTI flat bottom wheel with a matching airbag, but it seems hard to find golf airbags. I'm also cautious about 2nd hand airbags which may be older Takara based ones.

    Cheers

Just looked at the wiring diagram; the Passat airbag looks like a dual igniter, whereas the Jetta's is only single.

I've just obtained an airbag which fits the wheel - I assume it's single igniter as it only has the one igniter connector? (see pic)
I'm guessing the red wire is a ground which goes to the left bottom tab and presumably the rh side tab is the horn.

Looking inside at my Jetta, I can see the airbag has more ground connections:

The Jetta harness part number is 5K0 971 584D. My Jetta SW terminal where the black MFSW plug goes appears to have 5 wires and part 5K0 959 542C. The (Passat) wheel I have has part 3C8 959 537D. I guess I'm not sure if the Passat wheel will function correctly when plugged into the connector.
