Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VIC Diamond Pattern Chains on an All Track

    Hi all,

I'm obviously new to VWWatercooled. We currently have a 2007 Passat, and a 2012 Golf GTD.

We are updating the 2007 Passat to a Wolfsburg All Track 218, so we can take it camping and to the snow. On visiting Mount Hotham last week, we found out that there were no diamond pattern chains that would fit our 2007 Passat safely.

I rang our dealer today to find out about wheel and tyre size that would safely fit chains on the 2018 Wolfsburg, and it seems the answer is none. I think it comes with 235/40 R19 (please correct me if wrong), but in the manual he sent through, it says we would need 215/55 R17. I would have to order a whole new set of wheels in addition to the ones we get, and change them over. And even then, it may void the warrantee if we use them - but he wasn’t clear on any of this.

I’m having trouble getting any validated information of any of this from anyone. Is this right?

We are seriously considering a Subaru Outback instead, although would prefer the All Track. Then again, I'm not sure about diamond pattern chain issues on Subarus either.

    Interested in anyone's advice.

    Many thanks.
