R36 improvements

Hello,
I have read that removing the suitcase muffler in the R36 exhaust helps improve sound. Has anyone done this and are there any other exhaust modifications that can improve things without spending too much money. I'm in eastern suburbs in Melbourne so if anyone can lead me in the right direction that would be fantastic.
