Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VIC Hey VW Watercooled

    Hey all,

Decided i should post abit of background as i keep asking for strange things.
I currently own a 2009 VW Passat CC, that i have on a novated lease and it goes back early next year. Currently looking at replacement options which are cheaper (purchased a house) for the next 12-24months. So will end up with a Golf (Mk6 TDI or MK7 TSI) or a 2014ish normal Passat with a tow bar (something i dont have right now and it annoys me to no end).

Also have a Lotus 7 replica that i have just finished getting through engineering and now dealing with Vicroads to get plates on it.
Now that is done starting a new project which is going to be a mid engine single seater that uses a V6 and Transaxle from a 2000 VW Passat.

    Some pics of my cars:

    The next project donor Passat

And the BMW powered Locost (Lotus 7 inspired replica)

    Cheers,

    Nice lineup Taffy!

What is the drivetrain setup of the donor passat?
    Looks like a big engine.

Going to be N-S using the auto still. I like to avoid cracking open parts to make mods, in this case installing a manual box - etc etc.
Two issues with using the Audi/VW set ups is that the output of the half shafts is really low off the box, meaning the engine has to sit higher if you run low ground clearance. The porsche transaxles can be rotated but VW/Audi cannot.
The 2nd is that engine is large as you note and is actually really close to the outputs as well, which is an issue in my case as it wont fit under the desired body work, so going to need to make the engine covers part of the body work. Not the end of the world but annoying.

A screenshot, still very much a work in progress as i lock in suspension points and then bring the frame around to suit it + the engine.

Currently have MX-5 uprights to go all round but looking at changing to Golf Mk4's, which - should - allow me to use the short near side half shafts unmodified and allow for identical suspension all round as i convert the McPherson strut to double A-arm. Did this to BMW E36 uprights for the Lotus 7 replica by using machined inserts with a thread cut into the center to attach a rose joint.

      Cheers,

      Taffy
