Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • QLD Newbie pre-VW buyer

Hi VWW folk. My name is James, I am 23, live in Redcliffe and am about to buy my 2nd car. I've had a Mazda 323 BA series 3 (sedan version of Mx5) as my first and only car. It's starting to sing her final hoorah so I'm looking at getting into the VW scene.
My dad recently owned an '08 Golf GTi with an APR stage 1 chip. It was great fun to drive (although he only let me drive it once in the 3 yrs he had it, haha).

I'm also a new business owner so I need a car with a little bit of "presence". So the Jetta has my attention at the moment. Searching classified and gumtree and dealers for the right one, but I think the MK5 TFSI 2.0 has my attention. Maybe a TDI but I'm still researching.

Looking forward to enjoying a long term VW enthusiasm!

If you can find a good example, the 147TSI is a great car. It has the motor out of the GTI (can have the same stage 1 tune) and is a little less common than the Golf.

There's a really nice example on carsales for $16k in Brisbane with only 25k on the clock would be a good pick-up if it checks out OK.

Steer clear of the 118TSI twin charger and/or the 7 speed DSG in the lower power petrol cars as these are known to be problematic.

Thanks for your suggestions guys, keep 'em coming!

I think I'm searching more around the sub-$10k level.

I've got these three potentials Jetta's at the moment.

          (1st option): 2.0 TDI 2006; 105'000km; black; bluetooth - $8'800 exc gov charges (dealer)
(2nd option): 2.0 TFSI 2006; 75'000km; dark blue; sunroof - $8'800 exc gov charges (dealer)
          (3rd option): 2.0 TFSI 2006; 140'000km; black; 19" allows + lowered + satnav display unit + leather - $8000 (private)

Hoping to get the first option for around $8k if possible. Dealer might be useful for GST claiming with business... but otherwise I hate dealers.

I think diesel engine also seems to get more love from VWWers because of it's potential longevity. But then again, this petrol I'm looking at is 30'000 less km's anyway for the same price. So either choices are actually good (IMO) if i can get them for around $8k.
3rd option seems like a last resort, haha.

You might find with the current situation with diesel emissions / recall that you could pick up a TDI from a dealer cheap. I can imagine that these guys will be really happy for someone to take it off their hands right now - you could pick it up for close to what they paid for it. I'd play hardball with them as they won't want to get stuck with this car.

For the buyer that's not fussed about the emissions scandal you'll be able to pick up a bargain if you play your cards right.

Diesel had me for a few reasons, but the stars have aligned and tonight I bought that TFSI for $8600. Turns out it was prechipped (With some black box and an orange light?) hardwired in the engine bay. Not sure if i'm happy with that kind of chip, because I don't know enough about it... but i'll keep researching and decide if I keep it or go for a Revo...

but YAY! I have a VW
