Hi all, need some opinions on what to buy, mk6 GTI or R . Looking for a 5 door, love the dsg but would consider manual for right car . From what I've read the R seems to have a harsh ride? Help would be appreciated thanks!
if you don't like any harsh ride, go with a Tiguan petrol. same engine as the Mk6 GTI with the benefit of AWD on wet
if you want to go faster (on the drag strip) go with the R but around town it feel heavy(er) due to weight and bigger turbo (torque kicks later at higher rpm than GTI / Tiguan).
if you want lowest petrol consumption, go with the mk6 GTI.
I own (owned) all 3 cars.
harsh ride is totally subjective and has too many variables (car and environment).
I'd love to drive bot to compare but not really an option where I live. I'll have to drive about 500km to adelaide or Melbourne to buy one. I drove a mk6 gti brand new and loved it, I like what extra the R has to offer. I've traditionally been a commodore man, monaros, senators etc but just fell in love with the vw brand. I think I'm leaning toward the R as long as I can get one at the right price.
My 10c worth of opinion is that if you buy the GTi you will always wish you had bought the R. We (my wife & I) went through the same questions when looking at the Golf, and eventually plumped for the R, but in Scirocco not Golf. Never regretted it once. You get used to the ride.
2013 Stock Standard Scirocco R - Indium Grey - DSG
In my experience comparing the Mk6 R to Mk6 GTI (both running 18" wheels, without the ACC/active dampers) over the same roads, the R is actually slightly more compliant and less jiggly over small high-frequency bumps. The R has a lot of extra weight, especially in the rear, and feels more planted and solid as a result.

Isn't Scirroco R FWD whereas Golf R is AWD - therefore Scirroco R is more like an Edition30 or Pirelli?
carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
