VIC Another bloody DSG query...

Hi gang, have been keen on a 125 Diesel Passat for a while and whilst hunting around I cottoned on to a 118 which offered a lot more for my 30K budget...to be precise a MY11 125 with 40k on the clock against a MY13.5 with 12K 118 for the same money. The included options on the MY13.5 are hard to resist.

Obviously the DSG issue has come up a bit...well a lot...in researching and I've gone and gotten myself confused. Can anyone summarise for me are the MY13.5 118 subject to DSG issues and do VW Aus actually have a 5yr drivetrain and trans warranty in place as reported? I can only find ref to a 3yr warranty on their website.

Confusion aside I'm keen as mustard on the MY13.5 wagon...just seems so much car for the money.

3 year warranty only. There was a very short period where VW offered a 5 year warranty on the drivetrain in response to a lot of negative press in the media. When the negative press went away so did the extended warranty.... You would have to check with VW for the particular VIN you're looking at to confirm the warranty. Recommend getting that one in writing if they say it has 5 years should you ever need it later.

Understand the attraction for the newer lower km car. If it was me I wouldn't keep the 7 speed outside warranty. If you do buy it, I'd also factor in the cost of an extended warranty and then sell it within that period. The diesel has a lot more torque. Suggest driving both then decide.

Thanks Tigger, not the answer I wanted but probably the one I needed. Newbie question...can you actually purchase an extended warranty on a used car?

As long as the car is still under warranty you can extend it. Check the service history is good (ie serviced every 12 months/15,000km) and you shouldn't have a problem (in terms of warranty).

If you plan on keeping the car longer term the 6 speed DSG in the diesel is definitely the better unit with less problems.

If you want to spend around $30k and are concerned about the 7 speed DSG then I'd also look at an OctaviaRS which comes with the 6 speed and/or a Tiguan which has the better 7 speed (available in the 132/155TSI and diesels).

I was in a similar position recently and have just ordered a new MY15 Subaru Liberty There's nothing in the VW range around $30k that didn't have either the 118TSI twin charger engine, 7 speed DSG or both
