Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hi there
Just bought myself a 2006 Polo Gti
It has reasonably high kms for its age, around 165,000 and is completely stock.. apart from a few extra squeaks and rattles.
Having owned it now for a few weeks I've discovered a few issues, which im hoping this forum has dealt with before

    Issues:
    - high fuel consumption (10l/100km) - will replace air filter soon?
    - 3rd gear crunches occasionally - looking into changing gearbox oil (redline MTL?)
    - engine rattle at low rpm ie. 5th gear at 50kmh. not sure if this is normal. my 06 Polo club (1.4) does this no trouble
    - slight diff or gearbox whine
    - A/C wont stay on on fan speed 1 (cuts out)
    - air vents are very stiff hard to change direction

    Issues solved so far
    - jammed cup holder
    - cabin air filter changed

    Welcome.

    - litres per hundred is dependent on many things, in traffic or around town I'd expect 10's in my daily. Cruising down the highway with air con on it is still high 8l/100km, though mine is thirstier than others.
    - Gear crunch, Yeah change the fluid, that's the best thing to try first.
    - Engine rattle, why are you driving in 5th at 50kph?? It's not a diesel I wouldn't use 5th at less than 70kph as its much more taxing on your engine below that. It will also use more fuel. Engine rattle could be worn engine mounts, not uncommon at the age of our vehicles and those k's. First would change the driving habit and see if it's still there.
    - the gearboxes aren't the most quite, though change your fluid and driving, and see if it's still noisey.
    - A/C, that could be electrical, dodgy fuse connection or elsewhere so I'm not much use to you. Could check voltage at the fuse... but I'm making random guesses.

Do some of the above and if it still persists, jump into the 9n3 polo section to elaborate and get more input.

Engine rattle, you are using 98 octane right?

I guarantee it doesn't rattle in the cabin as bad as mine does

Gearbox will def be better with an oil change, Redline isn't the only one that would probably fix it though, if you can't find any local.
