VIC Newbie needs advice

Hi, long term VW fan having owned various GTI's. Current long term weekend toy is a MY08 MKV R32. It's mint but I need a new boot lid interior panel as mine has a few scratches (I know I am being anal)... Any ideas where I can source one please?

Also need advice on engine mods eg flash and cold intake/filter, who has done what combo's and how is it?

Hi there,

An ECU Tune on an NA engine, especially the R32, is pretty much worthless. Unless you're adding a full exhaust, headers, cold air intake and cams, you're not gonna get any value for money. Even then you're not gonna get much power, maybe 20kW at the wheels. If you're looking for power I'd suggest Forced Induction or don't chase it. If you've got a DSG, then a DSG Tune is the best option for you with a Cold Air Intake and Exhaust for some noise.

Most people go FORGE Intake with a Milltek catback.

As Jon said, any ECU chip on the R32 is bound to give you a maximum of 11kw if you are lucky. Surely there is an exhaust on the cards? Gotta make the 32 PURRR!

I am currently running a Forge Motorsport CAI on my MKV R32 and about to change to the GruppeM. Love it. Induction noise is fantastic and it gives off a more aggressive raspy note. Forge Motorsport, GruppeM, EVOMS and BMC CDA seem to be the top tier intakes for the R32. I would say the NA motor has been done to the limit as far as development is concerned unless you go Turbo or Supercharger. To me, Suspension & Handling is where you should start. Then engine mounts to reduce movement under load. VW Racing sell arguably the best mounts. Handling wise, a good set of coilovers are an excellent purchase from the likes of KW, H&R or Bilstein.

Superpro Control arms for the front are also a worthy investment to give a tighter feel to the front end. Sway bars from H&R or whiteline will help minimise excessive body roll. And a Unibrace XB helps with rigidity in the rear, and braces the rear shock towers.

Thanks for the help, plenty to think about. I had seen the GruppeM and liked the look of it. Any advice on exhausts without much drone? I know it's such a novice question but this is all new learning for me so can't decide between resonated v Non. What sort of extra power would I gain from from filter & exhaust system?

Also if anyone is based in Melbourne who do you recommend to buy from?

It no doubt is the best looking Cold Air Intake of them all for the R32. Nothing comes cheap with these cars. I currently run a Non-Resonated Milltek Cat-Back exhaust and here are my thoughts. Great exhaust and would certainly recommend it if you want some added decibels and rasp. A little bit of drone is noticeable around 100km/h especially when going up hills or cruising on the highway in 'D'. Around town it is fantastic and turns heads. I would try and keep clear of all U.S. made systems NEUSPEED, BORLA, MagnaFlow, Eurojet and BlueFlame because they are obnoxiously loud and drone is all you will get.

What is your budget?

Supersprint is also another beautiful exhaust and in reach of most pockets, sound is enhanced and you can tell it's a quality system from the tone. Milltek, Supersprint, HMS, F-Town, Capristo (secondhand), Kreissieg and APR RSC. Listen to them all on YouTube and if you can find someone in Melbourne with one of them that would be even better. Resonated and Non-Resonated, but Milltek Resonated sounds worse than stock and the Supersprint Res is far too quiet for my liking. I would be leaning towards Non-Res if you want the greatest experience out of your drives.

They do go nicely with intake/exhaust and a set of cams + tune. Don't expect massive gains though. I would say around 10-15kw if you get the right combination going (exhaust & CAI).

GIAC, Etuners and Recode Tuning Systems are the best place to start for a ECU reflash. Don't approach any other "off the shelf" tuning companies. I would also recommend United Motorsports (ECU+DSG/spark cut) in the states but the chances of them responding to your email is highly unlikely.
