Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hi there!

Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. My name is Anthony but everyone calls me Fossy. I'm an accountant and I drive a Golf R32 Mk5 2008 model.

Don't have an extensive list of mods like most people here but the car does have:

    - a full Focal and OA sound system, a double din JVC head unit.
    - Litec rear tail lights (smoked & LED)
    - Magnaflow cat-back exhaust
    - Brushed matte grey vinyl all over with carbon side mirrors & front grille (by ProVinyl)

i am a little bit of a car enthusiast and would eventually like to include to my R32:

    - Coilovers and 18" rims (most likely looking at Rota Wheels and Bilsteins)
    - A turbo (haven't really thought about what kit to put in - suggestions?)
    - a tune and dyno testing when the turbo is on

    Thanks for your time!

        Introduction

Hey Robbie. Yes I do have Facebook. My name is Anthony Confos.

Here are some photos of it whilst in the shop - haven't had a chance to get a proper photo shoot but it'll do the trick.

Will definitely get better photos going once I get the chance

No problem. What's the intention for the car?

            - Coilovers (KW's, Bilstein's, FK Konigsports) + ride height drop
            - Regular wheel alignments (golf's are prone to "toe out" as a natural creep)
            - Unibraces XB, and UB
            - Haldex Gen 2 Performance Controller
            - Cold Air Intake (GruppeM, EVOMS, Forge Motorsport)
            - H&R Sways (24, and 26mm)
            - Superpro Control Arms + ALK + Adjustable ball joints
            - VWR engine and transmission mounts. Even give DLI-Teknik spring mounts a crack. Hear they go alright.
            - Nice set of wheels (18" x 8.5" x 45 offset is your best, and safest bet).
            - United Motorsports DSG flash, or City Performance Centre, or Recode
            - United Motorsports ECU flash, CPC, Recode or ETuners
            - Turbo kits with internals (C2, HGP, or CTS via integrated engineering), or do a custom job. Depends what kind of power you want. Maybe a GTX3576R
            - Supercharger options (Rotrex, or ABT)

Turbo kits will set you back around $30-35k with internals installed (500 + HP, and 450-500Nm)
            Supercharger $25-30k installed (400 + HP)

That would get you well under way Anthony.

              Introduction

I want something that's nice at the moment - with the thoughts or racing/tracking it in the future. At the moment it's my daily (hence all the "little" mods that go alright for eye candy to other car enthusiasts as I'm stuck in traffic in the city haha).

Really appreciate it mate. Have a magnaflow at the moment as I got a really good Deal on it, but have always loved the sound of a militek.

I'm thinking these rims in 18"

I'm thinking turbo instead of supercharger - something about the flutter just gets me every time haha.

Will definitely be saving this post of yours to slowly mod my golf into the beast it can be!

              Cheers mate

I currently have the Milltek Non-Res Cat Back on my MKV. Sounds the goods. You bet I am always looking for tunnels to magnify the glorifying experience. I am sure whatever you have planned for yours will unravel nice. Do all the steering wheel functions work with the aftermarket head unit?

                Supercharging is not as expensive as you would think: R32 Golf V Supercharger Stage 2 - Carlicious-Parts • Augsburg • Tuning • Chiptuning • VR6 • Kompressor Kit • V5 • Turbo • R32 • VW

All the steering wheel controls work except for phone pick-up. As far as I'm aware, the reason for this is because it was a factory extra to get the Bluetooth phone for the original r32, so I would have to dig out the chord and connect it = too much effort haha.

There was an adapter I bought for around $60 to get this all going with minimal effort req'd.

I will definitely be stealing the large majority of your recommendations to get started haha. Needed help with the performance/handling sector

That's very true, it isn't as expensive as I would have originally thought. Perhaps that is an option in the foreseeable future - although I wouldn't mind getting the rims, coilovers, sways, control arms and upgrade the transmission and engine mounts first!

19" wheels are also not worth the time buying. 18" x 9" you can run, and ET45. You will just clear the inner front strut by a bee's ****, but you will need to run 225's and roll/flare the guards a little without the need to run a shameful level of neg camber. What size are those ROTA wheels?

8.5" and ET45/40 is preferred, and gives you a far better contact patch on a 225 tyre which is the legal load rating.

The things you should consider if turbocharging down the track. Really comes down to your wallet. Turbocharging is a lot more costly than supercharging as you have noticed.

                      - Suspension and Handling upgrades as much as you can go (Coilovers, sways, control arms, ALK, end links, unibraces, maybe new uprights if you're keen)
                      - Engine mounts
                      - Consideration of engine internals (lightened valves, main bearings, balanced crank, JE pistons, pauter rods, ARP studs, port and polished head, injector upgrades, secondary fuel pumps). These are not needed for 420Hp as you noted, but certainly will help in getting the best out of the engine, and a solid foundation, day after day with peace of mind.
                      - DSG upgrades, but SSP clutch packs, and DSG cooler is something to think about. Combined with the new flash, this would be ideal. Something raises an eyebrow for me hitting a gear on peak boost on a stock OEM DSG that has running miles on it.
                      - Short runner intake. I think O34 do them, CTS, and C2 definately do, as do HGP
                      - Ceramic coated pistons. You wont have an issue as you will probably be tuned rich, but wouldnt want to go to all that work and burn a piston with ****ty detonation.
                      - Ensure you get the right injectors, and fuel delivery system.
                      - You should also communicate how many kms is on your car to whoever supplies you kit. They can tweek things slightly differently for a higher km car.

Yeah mate, the car is still a baby 53,600kms on the clock

The Rota's have the option of 18x8.5 so will probably go for that at the end of the day seeing as you are suggesting that.

There's a lot to do to make it a sweet little ride but worth it at the end of the day

What was the colour of the car before the vinyl wrap? Once you start, you will find it hard to stop

Car was the gunmetal grey before. Wanted something that was different to other but not too different that I had to go to the RMS for change in colour. Plus, I absolutely loved the colour to start with.

If I decide to do it again, it'll be a matte blue
