Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Electrical problems

    I have a 98 mk4 golf 1.6 that's got a few
Electrical issues. First up. The S-contact fuse is blowing? What is the S-contact?
Then I have a Sony head unit in the car and for some reason there is constant power to it. Even with keys out of the car. I currently have the live and the ignition wired together otherwise there is no power to the radio at all? What's my problem? Another issue I have is that the back door seems to not wanna lock or sometimes even unlock. Mind of its own. Then lastly the window feature that opens and closes all Windows with the key is not working? Was for a while but stopped once the radio started giving problems!! Would all of the be linked to the S-contact fuse? This has been driving me nuts!! Pls help me out

Need to swap the constant and accessories on the harness, the ISO plug that is meant to work usually has them backwards which means always on.

P-contact (Key on, then off (referred to as 'accessories')), will have the radio stay on, until you remove the key. Ensure that function works, and the rest will be straight forward.

However, a sticky ignition switch can sometimes cause P-contact to remain live all the time with the key on, off, then out. A bit of spray lube and a jiggle of the key will sort that out though.

My money is on a sticky switch in the ignition causing issues with the stereo and window.

The rear door mech could also be on the way out, might be worth getting a replacement and swapping them out to see if that fixes it. It's much easier to do when the door is still unlocking, much harder to do when you can't get the door open
