Thinking of buying Skoda Superb

Hi guys/gals,

I'm thinking of buying a used Skoda Superb wagon (pref a 118 Elegance). They just seem so much car for the money.

The only thing holding me back is fear about the DSG. Are Skoda DSGs prone to the same failures as VW? I've read different answers depending on 6sd, 7spd etc but can't figure it out. A little help would be really appreciated.

Also, any thoughts on Superb vs its rivals? I hate 4wds, so I'm looking at mid-large wagons. I've got maybe $25-$35k to spend and would buy up to 2-3yo. My other options would be Mazda 6 (new model), Calais V or maybe a Passat. The most important things for me are: Boot space, value, gizmos, ride, handling. In that order...

118 Elegance has the 7 speed DSG. Although they are better than they used to be I still wouldn't like to have it fail outside warranty. Suggest buying new/demo and factoring in the cost of extended warranty to the purchase.

There are some pretty good deals going on the MY12 Superb also if you don't mind the old shape. You may be able to find a demo/low km diesel with 6 speed DSG towards the top of your price range.

Agreed with the 6 Speed , still going strong on mine Superb MY12 Wagon consider over 56k Milage.
It is getting a bit hesitate lately but should see after the 60k service which has the Trans (DSG) oil change

Yes the 6 speed is used in the higher output/torque cars (diesels, GTI, R) so is a stronger gearbox than the 7 speed in the lower output models.

There are still occasional issues, however far fewer than the 7 speed from a few years ago which kept the dealership service dept busy.

Also I'm referring mostly to Golf as that is where the volume was sold and therefore where most issues were in terms of numbers of failures.

The 7 Speed has the dry clutch which has been performed with recall in the VAG Australia dealer (including Audi). I am told cars which are manufactured in the later half of the 2012 (not sure the exact date) should have been assembled with the proper clutch pack and updated component such as machatronic will not require a recall.

I would ask the stealer in regards to the recall matter prior purchasing any 7sp DSG

All lobby your dealers to give us the manual option in Australia. They have a much lower failure rate and are cheaper to replace. As customers we should be able to order what we like.

OK. This might seem repetitive, but I just want to make sure I am clear on this

#1 - The 7spd is more likely to be problematic (diesel is a better bet as I dont want the V6)
#2 - should be safe with a 7spd from mid-2012 onwards
#3 - pre mid-2012, this should have been fixed under recall or could be taken to Skoda to sort out if not already done

Assuming I'm right on those three statements, there doesn't seem to be massive risk...

Of all the cars on your list I would get the Mazda 6,its such a HOT looking car.

I can recommend the Passat. Bought mine new in 2011, 125 tdi highline wagon. I've done 96,000 trouble free km in it now. I
Also had the 6 speed dsg in a 2006 Jetta. From my experience they are bullet proof.
I test drove the Mazda 6 wagon at the time of buying the Passat. Honestly, the drive is completely incomparable. The Mazda feels sloppy, gutless and the plastics inside are woeful.
