Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Motorsport club or track day events

    Hi everyone...

I recently got my first golf gti VII and am looking at joining doing a few track days. Am a newbie to the tracks (never been). I heard from a mate of mine who owns a subaru wrx that he was part of a club/forum that organises track days every so often and even has days for newbies who want to learn the tracks. Does anyone know if there's a similar thing here?

I have created a 2014 Vic track day thread in the Motorsports subforum

The MSCA have run "come and try" sessions at most of their events this year for first timers wanting to see if track days are for them

Take a look in the motorsport section , there's a list of clubs in there.

PIARC runs a lot of introductory track days and will assist with training and education when you go out to their practice sessions. Take a look at their calendar.

      Phillip Island Auto Racing Club

Go out to a few events to see how they're run before you enter yourself. Get there at the opening of the gates and watch the procedures for signing in and scrutineering, make some friends and ask a lot of questions.

Time spent chatting to the officials about the requirements will save you a lot of confusion when you enter for the first time.

I should add that the "Come and Try" entrants get to run in their own sessions which are untimed and get assigned an instructor for the day that rides along with them. They also get a couple "class" sessions where the processes for "normal" entries are explained to them. A couple of friends came up with me to do this at the Winton day in March and loved it.

Pretty good for $135, especially since you don't need to be a member of a CAMS affiliated club to do this - you do only get to "Come and Try" once, though. The other series like VSSC should look into doing this too.
If I hadn't had friends who had been doing track days already (big thanks to Peter Jones for all his help and advice), I would have been all at sea for my first couple of days.

            Whoops - big typo

MSCA Come and Try is $135 incl the one day licence (not $65 ). Still a cheap way to put the toe in the water, though.
