  • Looking to buy a Volkswagen Golf MK4?

    G'day VW Water Cooled,

I'm Josh, I'm 16 and live down in Victoria. I'm really interested in getting a Volkswagen Golf MK4 as my very first car, I almost have enough money (I think) but there's a few questions I'm still wondering.

My first question is, what should I pay for a Volkswagen Golf MK4? From what I've seen on Gumtree & eBay I can pick up a fairly reasonable golf for $4000 - $5000. Would you pay that for a MK4, or would they defiantly have something wrong with them?

1.6L, 1.8L & 2L, how much power does a Golf produce? Look, I'm 16. I don't want to drive something that takes 60 seconds to get to 100 on the Highway. I see a fair bit on the Net that the 1.6L are quite slow, so should I stay away from the 1.6L? On the topic of Engines how are the VW Golfs on the Petrol? Per 100km and such.

Parts.. Parts. I know there's not a ton of VW Golf parts in Australia, but if I break something or want something custom, can I get them here in Australia or what does it cost to get them from Overseas? What do you guys do.

Thanks! I hope to hear back.

i was looking at skylines and other jap cars when i started looking but its better to get a more mature car for your first just to stay safe (trying to drift and racing) engine wise my mk4 1.6 isnt that different compared to my friends 2.0 ofcourse he is quicker but in saying that theyre not that much different. ive been babying my mileage for the last 3 months and i get 2 weeks out of a full tank. im not driving as much but the trip computer is telling me im getting 6.3/100. 0-100 isnt incredibly fast but it doesnt take 60 seconds
    hope that helps!
