Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW Hello

    Unusual.

I've joined dozens of forums over the years and this is the first I've struck that insists on an introductory post before unlocking the rest of the forums.

Anyway, I'm from just out of Newcastle and am looking to return to the VW fold after some 35 years away. Lots of beetles featured in my childhood, then 4 type 3's, then a lone Passat before LNC whiteanted VW in favour of Subaru.

I almost bought a Golf in late 2008. But the GFC was just starting to bite, it was hard to tell just how grim things were going to get and I still wasn't sure at the time how committed VW were to Australia. So I let my wife influence me to take what we thought would be the "safe" option and went GM instead...

What a great idea it was to buy a diesel Astra with the exploding 6-speed manual. 2 gearboxes later, I'm still wishing I'd gone with the Golf, despite the DSG issues.

Anyhow, when it eventually comes back from the workshop again, I plan to turf it ASAP in favour of an Octavia wagon. Still undecided between Ambition Plus manual / TDi / RS. I'm led to believe that the manual or 6-speed DSG are safer options than the 7-speed.

Then again, given my recent experience with the "safe" option...
