Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hi, from WA

    Hi everyone,
I am a first time vw owner. I recently purchased a 2014 limestone grey 90tsi comfortline wagon and love it!
i have always loved the golf but never had any guts to by one for fear of what my mates would think, so I struggled around in a gu patrol with an inter cooled 6.5 chev v8. Best decision I have made for a long time and saving a ****e load of $$$$!!
The car is standard for the moment but all I have in mind are some bigger wheels, tint and to lower it. I can get some santiagos for a good price but does any one have any experience with running the 19s? Also does any one know of a good suspension place here in perth? I would also like to know about possible speedo calibration with the bigger wheels and will my warranty become void if I do lower it? Thanks in advance

    Welcome to VWW.

Check out the wheel thread for ideas, but the Santiagos should not cause any issues as they are an OEM fit. In fact as they're actually 2mm less poke than the 18 inch Austins on the GTI lowering should not cause any rub issues either (within reason).

What size is on the 90TSI? It's easy enough to calculate the change then.

The warranty on your suspension components would generally be void as VWA would point to any work you do as a cause, but otherwise you should not have any other issues.

I am guessing these might be MIRSAD's Santiagos - if so they're a sharp price.

FYI - assuming 205/55/16 fitted to 90TSI Comfortline, then moving to 225/35/19 should net a -1.28% error (ie speedo calibrated for 100km/h, actual will be 98.7km/h) so fairly minimal and not causing a positive error that could cost a speeding ticket.

Thanks Dutch77, I have a contact at one of the local vw dealers hence getting a good price on the wheels, you are right they are the 205/55/16 and I'm sure I'll still sleep at night with the speedo only being out by not even 2 kmh. I wouldn't think with the 19s I could lower it all that much anyway without rub. Possibly something I'll do once the warranty period is up and if I end keeping it after the warranty.

Ahh, good work. As a comparison check MIRSAD's advert out - might be a further saving for as new wheels.

If you're just looking at a spring kit - I believe VWR, H&R and Eibach already have Mk7 kits out - then you shouldn't run into any issues with rub. Guy has confirmed his VWR springs are not rubbing at all. The only asterix I will put here is I am unsure how spring development has gone with the wagon, may require additional work or a wait for springs to be released.

Good luck and enjoy the car!
