Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Potential GTI buyer

    Hey guys,

Thought I'd check this forum out as you guys would have no doubt seen this question countless times. Currently own a Toyota 86 and doing the opposite of what many people are doing/have done - I'm looking to move to a DSG GTI. The 86 is a great car, but for the majority of my driving around Melbourne CBD these days and I think I would be better suited in a GTI. Plus the mrs can't drive a stick, and as a result would be able to downsize to 1 car.

Question I have though - I've got three options here. I'm looking at a demo Mk6 GTI with 3k on the clock for about 40 grand. I could go slightly higher, and get a Mark 7, but that'd be a few thousand more and I'm not *completely* sold on the look over the Mk6. I also don't think the interior is as nice.

There's also the option of getting a slightly higher km'd Golf R for a similar price as to what I'd expect to get the Mark 7 for. I don't have any particular requirement for 4wd and tbqh having driven the Roc didn't think it was that much quicker than the GTI.

Anyway, hello everyone, and hopefully I'll be owning some sort of Golf soon =)

If you are just going for city driving then the Mk6 GTI would be the one to go for.
Having siad that, the price is pretty steep for a Mk6 as there are tonnes on carsales.

Well, its *mostly* city driving. What do you think a reasonable amount is to pay for a mk6?

Mostly city driving should suit the mk6 GTI.

The pricing is a tough one as it really depends on what options you want/age/km and if you are willing to travel etc.

          Welcome to the forum.

I wouldn't be paying much over mid 30s for a mk6, particularly as the mk7 can be had in the lower 40s new. A good low mileage mk6 would be a great buy and suit your needs, while providing some left over cash if you get bored and decide to 'improve' things.

Decent stock (no or minimal factory options) mk6 gti with dsg with low kms under 40,000 have been selling just under $30k.

Just have to keep looking at the market to find a good one
