Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • WA GTI Pirelli - across Australia drive

Just arrived home after a drive from Brisbane to Geraldton WA. Had to delay leaving whilst the heatwave passed across the country. Fires in NSW and SA then floods in WA.

Car went faultlessly and was a pleasure to drive. Bought in Sydney just before Christmas, quick trip up to Hervey Bay and then home, a few more Kms on the odo than when purchased......

    sounds like fun.

The heatwaves, fires and floods are just a typical day in Oz!!

Yeah was a more relaxed trip than previous 2. Last time was in a Landcruiser Sahara and used nearly $1800 in 4 days from Brisbane. Took a more leisurely approach this time, 6 days from Sydney including a detour through Esperance and about $800 fuel even if it was a bit expensive, $2.20 at BP Balladonia.

Will try to get down to Perth for VW social activities...

interesting that you sourced your vehicle from the east. was it because of pricing? or just the lack of suitable choices here in WA? i'd like to follow a similar path except am worried that if I drove the vehicle back to WA, the car would be full of stone chips et al ... enjoy your "new" toy ....

          Hi Tiggy
yes I have bought from east before. Last year a late model BMW 320D, owned for a year and a WA dealer gave me $1000 less than I paid 11 months later. If I lived in Perth could have made a profit.....

Re the possible damage, yes I did get a couple of minor stonechips and a windscreen stone repair along the way but that was more due to the current amount of roadworks this side of Ceduna.

BMW came back with CEVA in fully enclosed transporter but $1900 can buy quite a few litres of 98 and nights accommodation.

Good to see you had an uneventful trip back.

I did Brisbane to Adelaide return for the TDU. 8.1L/100 there, 7.5L/100 back for some reason. About 2 months normal driving in 4 days.

The S3 went like a dream, used no oil, just 5 litres of water for the WI. No apparent loss of performance in the 40 degree heat. I can still walk upright, thanks Recaro and AFAIK no state governments made any additional money out of me!!
