Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • QLD Hello all, we are about to own another beetle again, this time a 1.8T

    Hello All,

I need some advice as i am looking at buying a 2001 VW Beetle 1.8 Turbo interstate that has done around 160'000kms.
I've previously owned a black 2Ltr beetle and it was a nice car but i found later in it's life it turned into an oil burner and started to get electrical problems.
I've owned a holden sportswagen for a while but looking to get back into a beetle again.

Not having owned a 1.8T beetle before what should i be looking for when buying used ?
from what i can see the leather is lifted off the door trim on one side which seems to be a common issue with aged beetles.
is there anything that is a known issue with the drive line or electrics with this model ?
I cant seem to remember also is there child restraints in the back seat of this car? we have a 4 yr old.

This particular car i'm looking at the owner mentioned that there was issue with the indicators, the way she described it was that sometimes after the indicators were cancelled the ticking sound continued, I know it's a pretty vauge diagnosis but has anybody else had this issue ? she was quoted $260 to repair.

I am a mechanic by trade so i will be able to fix most things on this car, i just need to know what to look out for that is model specific.
I have also arranged for a vehicle inspection to be done prior to me traveling interstate to purchase it.

any help would be greatly appreciated as i could be flying down to drive it home as soon as the weekend.

if all goes well hopefully i will become another contributor to this forum.

We let that one go as it was too far gone. But we've found another 1.8 turbo.
Is there anything I need to be aware of with these models ?

The 1.8T was a huge success in the 9n3 Polo GTI and the Mk4 Golf GTI.
You might have more luck searching there.

I don't know of many beetle owners on the forums as they didn't sell many to enthusiasts.

we thought we had found the perfect one for sale in qld, but it sold in 5 hrs of being listed on gumtree !!! we were gutted

so we gave up on the older ones and bought a brand new one !!
very excited, we got a 2013 black beetle manual with the sports pack and the twister 18's for 29K drive away
just have to wait two weeks for it to arrive

Thank you, once the dust settles on the new car i would like to do a few things to it.
I've been looking around and stumbled across this pic, this is very much the look i would be going for.

The downside is these wheels 4739 euros not including freight !! i might have to look around for another wheel that looks the same in the wheel shops
I also would like to do a stereo upgrade at some point.
