Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • yo, glad to come across vwc such that i can learn to concur my mk4 golf gti ;-)

    yo all,

joined up to learn how to fix up some issues with my 2000 mk4 golf gti
also had a shocking run of average services around perth, happy to do it myself from now!

i found a good assessment here of a coolant leak issue that i've had surfaced recently. it seems to be a flange off the engine on the passenger side between the block and the air filter.

saw a post covering this, the banter suggested to get the replacement part from hsy / impart. had a look at their sites, how do you source parts from these wholesale distributors (at least hsy appeared to have that criteria)?

what part details are generally required to play a part order, e.g. the coolant flange i'll be after..
    any help appreciated

    cheers for any words

Welcome to the forum James. If you're after a local service agent to have a look at the car, you can try Quattro Motors or Elite Euro etc. There's a few good places around other than the dealers.

If you're keen to do it yourself, check out ECS Tuning online. The shipping from US can be pretty pricey though. There's also a parts program you might be able to hunt down online EKTA which should be able to provide you with part numbers.

    Cheers

hey man, thanks for the info i'll have a look into ecs tuning and ekta. for sure i'll keep quattro motors/elite euro in mind for my continued servicing needs, i've had a bad record of recent with average service quality. how this coolant leak issue wasn't recognised it beyond me, i asked the garage to fill up an empty coolant tank and went to pick up a car dry of coolant with dead battery urhh... sometimes ya just gotta do things yourself.

so yeh gona try tackle this coolant leak issue on my own, i dig the idea of building a better knowledge of what's under the hood as well it'll keep me nice and busy!
      much appreciated

Depending how many KM you've done, check the service records too - the water pump should have been replaced as well. The plastic parts inside are prone to failing so the pump just stops working & they can leak from there too. And don't put green in either

ahah cheers, got the coolant already sorted. i'll look at the water pump also i've done 185,000km. believe it or not someone broke into my car and only pinched the service records and manual so it's probably worth replacing regardless hey? i'd probably know about is $wise if it'd be replaced, i think i can recall all the major part replacements over the past 80,000km water pump doesn't ring any bells

It often gets done at the same time as the timing belt, due to high labour costs of pulling everything apart so might have been done already, but it's probably due again if you're coming up to 200,000km anyway
